Four hundred years ago, Porta Paola stood as Ferrara’s ultimate security checkpoint. Guards searched bags, merchants paid taxes, and even Napoleon attempted to rewrite its historic role. For centuries, this landmark kept unwanted guests out of the city. Today, however, its greatest threat is modern single-use plastic.
On 24 October, the University of Ferrara‘s COLOURS team is partnering with Plastic Free Ferrara to turn the ancient perimeter into a clean zone. As a key partner within the COLOURS Alliance, Plastic Free shares our commitment to the green transition by empowering young people to safeguard the environment and actively serve their local community. Endorsed by the Municipality of Ferrara and Gruppo Hera, this initiative highlights how regional collaboration drives sustainable urban change.
Spend two hours helping us restore this Renaissance icon and hunt for 21st-century “artifacts” that do not belong in our shared history.
