Cosmology, with a particular emphasis on the physics of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation

Short description of the research team

Thematic fields of interest/research areas: The main interests of the research team lie in the field of cosmology, with a particular emphasis on the physics of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Research carried out in the group includes the analysis and interpretation of observational data provided by CMB experiments, the development of algorithms for the statistical analysis of cosmological data, and constraints on fundamental physics from cosmological and astrophysical observations. The team has partecipated to the analysis and interpretation of the Planck data, and is currently part of several experimental collaborations, and has active collaborations with several international instutions

Manager/head of the team: The head of the team is Prof. Paolo Natoli, associate professor at UniFE. Prof. Natoli had a leadership role, within the Planck collaboration, in the development of the likelihood used for the analysis of the Planck data. He has also guided the study of systematic effects of the CORE proposal

Team members: Other members of the group currently include Dr. Massimiliano Lattanzi (INFN researcher), Dr. Luca Pagano (fixed-term UniFE researcher), Dr. Diego Molinari and Dr. Francesco Forastieri (postdocs), and several Ph. D. students

Research infrastructures:

The group has access to several computing facilities, including: the local UniFE-INFN CPU-GPU cluster; dedicated resources for fundamental physics and CMB data analisys at the italian computation facility CINECA (ranking 14th in the 2017 top500 list of the 500 fastest supercomputers) and at the US Lawrence-Berkeley National Laboratory NERSC facilty (8th on the same list).
