Training objectives

The course of Physiology aims to provide students with the information on the functioning of the human body systems. It will provide the foundation for understanding the functioning of living beings focusing on the structure-function relationships, their dynamic integration and the general mechanisms of functional control in normal conditions. Through analysis and comparison of physiological systems and responses in different organisms, the basis for a critical analysis of complex systems will be provided. The program ranges from the analysis of the functionality from individual organs to the entire organism in response to the environment inside and outside.

Knowledge and understanding: learning the molecular, cellular and systemic mechanisms underlying the functioning of living beings.

Applying knowledge and understanding: Ability to assess the role of physiologic systems in different contexts, in particular in relation to the body's activities, to environment and pathological conditions.

Making judgments: Ability to interpret and evaluate experimental data and graphs illustrating the functional characteristics of living things.

Communication skills and ability to learn: proper use of scientific language of the discipline; ability to communicate information through charts and figures. Use of multimedia study tools: paper texts, audio lessons, video simulations, access to online information.

Prerequisites

No propedeutic course is required to attend this course However, basic knowledge of the following subjects is expected:
foundations of cytology and histology, elements of macro and microscopic anatomy, mathematics, physics and inorganic, organic and biological chemistry. Most of the multimedia material used will be in English, and therefore at least basic knowledge of this language is necessary.

Didactic methods

The tuition consists of theoretical lessons for a total of 48 hours. The Power Point presentations of the lectures will be downloadable from internet at an address that will be provided by the teacher during the lessons.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is normally performed in writing, and only exceptionally and for justified reasons in oral form. The written test consists of three questions with open answers and is performed at the computer lab of the Department of Life Sciences and Biotechnology (Word file). Paper sheets are provided for charts and formulas, to be attached to the printed text. In addition to the overall level of preparation, the ability to present a specific topic in an appropriate, clear and correct form will be evaluated. For the written exam are allowed 120 minutes. The answers to each question are evaluated up to 11 points for optimal response, and the final score is the sum of the marks to individual questions. In case of emergency or after evaluation of request by students, an oral examination could be considered.
