Training objectives

To achieve a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B1 level in Spanish language, developing written and oral comprehension and production skills through the analysis of morpho-syntactic and lexical structures of Spanish. Deepen the touristic language and its textual genres. At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at home, school, leisure; he/she will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in a Spanish-speaking area. He/She will produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest and will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans; he/she will identify lexic and morpho-syntactic peculiarities in touristic texts and produce new touristic texts.

Course programme

The course will cover the contents of the manuals and the “dispense” used during the year. It will deepen spelling, phonetical, morphological, syntactical and lexical aspects of Spanish language both theoretically and practically. The practical part, taught by native speakers, will aim to practice oral comprehension and expression skills and written comprehension and expression skills, through dictations, written compositions, reading texts and conversation. The theoretical part, held by Prof. Giulia Giorgi in the 2nd semester, will analyze the tourist language in its morpho-syntactic and lexical aspects; particular attention will be devoted to touristic textual genres.

Didactic methods

The course includes on line and presence lectures with student participation and exercises. The lessons of the mother-tongue teachers will deepen the reading and understanding of texts, writing, oral comprehension and expression and translation in homogeneous proficiency groups. The theoretical course, held by Prof. Giulia Giorgi in the 2nd semester will be dedicated to tourist language and touristic genres.

Learning assessment procedures

Assessments are different for attending and non-attending students.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS: a final examination in an official date (from June 2023), consisting of a written test and an oral exam.
The written test consists of various grammar exercises (between 5 and 8, different types: complete, transform, correct) and a written composition. This assessment will be about ALL the contents of the manuals and the “dispense” provided by the teacher. The written composition -a text about one of the themes proposed- will have a minimum length of 300 words and must respect the subject required: the morphological and spelling correction, the use of grammatical structures studied during the course and the consistency and cohesion of the text will be evaluated in this part. The use of vocabulary is forbidden. The test will be passed (18/30) if the student shows a sufficient language and lexical proficiency in the written composition, and completes correctly at least 60% of the grammar exercises. During the oral part, the student must be able to present him/herself (hobbies, habits, projects, etc.) and to interact about ALL the texts of the anthology provided.

ATTENDING STUDENTS: A partial test at the end of the first semester (in mid-December), a paper (at the end of the second semester), with a final oral exam.
The contents of the December partial corresponds to the grammatical topics studied during the semester: it consists of various grammatical exercises (between 4 and 6, different types: complete, transform, correct). The test will be passed (18/30) if the student completes correctly at least 60% of the grammar exercises. If he/she doesn’t pass the partial, he/she will take the grammar final exam.The use of vocabulary is forbidden.
The paper that must be presented at the end of the second semester is an original touristic text, written my the student. The text (maximum lenght 2-3 pages, with photos and images), must have the structure of an informative-persuasive tourisitic brochure about student’s town, city, region or about one of its peculiarities (enogastronomical, historical, cultural, etc.) and must be sent at least a week before the oral exam. The test will be passed (18/30) if the student shows a sufficient language and lexical proficiency. During the oral part, the student must be able to present him/herself (hobbies, habits, projects, etc.) and to interact about his paper.
