Training objectives

The course aims to provide the student with the basic knowledge of the human bio-diversity, its origin and evolution, and the means to analyse it, in particular with the methods of anthropometry. The course will also inform about the application of this knowledge to some items of ergonomics. For each trait, differences in gender, age and ethnicity will be taken into account, in line with the approach proposed by Gender Medicine.

Knowledge, applied knowledge and understanding:
The course will provide students with the basic knowledge to express individual morphometric characteristics in measurable parameters, measures useful among others to identify physical aptitudes towards specific sports and to customise training methods.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of human Anatomy.

Course programme

Frontal lessons
Introduction to the course. History of Anthropometry and Ergonomics. Anthropometric reference points and tools for measures. History of Anthropology. Biodiversity and genetic biodiversity. Notions of Primatology. Biodiversity over time: the evolution of hominids and Homo sapiens. Notions of Anatomy and Biomechanics. Anthropometry of the head, trunk and limbs. Height, weight and BMI. Body composition. Physiometry. Somatotype. Self-image. Secular trend. Genomics (of sport). Human populations. Anthropometry and performance. Evolutionary meaning of the Physical Activity. Descriptive and inferential statistics applied to Anthropometry. Ergonomics.

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons:
Where possible, the frontal lesson is interactive, based on questions addressed to the students for stimulating reasoning, thus a dynamic acquisition of concepts.

Exercises of Statistics (where possible).

Learning assessment procedures

The verification of learning will be performed by written examination. The text will consist of multiple-choice questions, related to all topics covered in class. Possibly, we will propose a preliminary partial test.
