Training objectives

The course aims to make students mature the essential skills for the evaluation of psycho-social interventions that are carried out to make the psychiatric patient autonomous.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for dealing with the notions related to the course are the knowledge of psychopathology, the ability to know how to compile a therapeutic rehabilitation project with short, medium and long term objectives and notions related to the Recovery process.

Course programme

EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES: A brief history of theatrical and artistic interventions in Italian psychiatric hospitals, starting from the experience at Trieste psychiatric hospital at the time when Franco Basaglia was working there. Theoretical approach and examples of practical activity and psycho-physical training.
PSYCHOMOTOR REHABILITATION: Effective communication: metacommunication and analogue language.
The motivational approach with the psychiatric patient.
The body and psychomotor therapy.
PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS: Intervention techniques and programming in favor of the patient and his family with regard to mental disorder and its pharmacological, psychological, socio-rehabilitative treatment. Learning of psychoeducational intervention techniques built on the patient's need and in consideration of his skills. Notes on the Spivak and psychodynamic approach to intervention.
Techniques of drafting and intervention of the psychoeducational plan in favor of the patient / family through simulated with respect to taking charge of the individual case. Introduction to the concept of recovery.
STRUCTURED INTERVENTION ON PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS: Definition and classification of abilities.
Abilities as a prognostic factor of rehabilitation outcome.
The impact of symptoms and cognitivity on functional outcome.
Description of the social skills model.
Focus on the main learning strategies.
Deepening of the Social Skills Training intervention: theoretical references, methodology,evaluation tools, evidence of effectiveness
ANTHROPOLOGY: Definition and causes of bio-diversity.
Anthropological variability over time (Human evolution. Changes during the homination process)
Anthropological variability in space: changes with age, gender and population. The secular trend. Growth and ageing.
Somatometry: stature, BMI.
Body image.
Anthropological and psycho-social variability of human populations: Adaptation to the environment; Ethnic groups; Immigration and health status.
EVALUATION OF PSYCHO-SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS: Learning how to apply the various scales for the evaluation of psycho-social interventions: VADO, CASIG, SAFE, CAN, RAS.

Didactic methods

XPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES: Frontal interactive lessons and laboratory practice play.
PSYCHOMOTOR REHABILITATION: frontal and experiential lessons.
PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS: Lectures and experimentation of the users' psychoeducational intervention cards.
STRUCTURED INTERVENTION ON PERSONAL STRUCTURED INTERVENTIONS ON PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS: Frontal lecture, role playing, group exercises.
ANTHROPOLOGY: Recorded lessons; possible meetings in individual streaming, with the class or with groups (if required).
EVALUATION OF PSYCHO-SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS: Frontal lesson (in presence / in direct streeming), interactive, viewing of films with completion of a questionnaire taken into consideration, working groups.

Learning assessment procedures

EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES: Starting from a discussion regarding the topics that were dealt with during theoretical lessons and theatrical laboratories, students are requested to write a short essay in order to express personal insight over the educational and therapeutic value of theatre in a psychiatric environment. Assessment of laboratorial activities will consider diligence and interactive participation; assessment of the written short essay will consider precision and clearness of the presentation.
PSYCHOMOTOR REHABILITATION: oral examination
PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS: First part written exam consisting in the creation of a structured psychoeducational intervention on clinical cases presented by the teacher to be carried out independently, estimated time two hours. Oral exam consisting of three questions on the suggested textbook with particular reference to the chapters indicated in class. Estimated time about 15 minutes each.
Evaluation criteria.
For the written part: consistent use of the theoretical applications, adequate drafting of the plan according to the planning for objectives and verifications, indicating consistently the objectives and methods of achieving them and their verification. For the oral part, clarity of presentation, capacity for synthesis and overall vision, consistency of the contents expressed and communicative clarity, ability to connect and personal elaboration of what has been learned.
STRUCTURED INTERVENTION ON PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS: The examination consists of an oral test, with two questions regarding the acquisition of the principles and theoretical references at the basis of social skills techniques and the methodology of intervention of Social Ski lls Training. The evaluation criteria are related to expositive clarity, precision, ability of practicalapplication, technical rigor.
ANTHROPOLOGY: 30 Multiple-choice quizzes (3 answers) + 1 for praise
EVALUATION OF PSYCHO-SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS: oral exam, divided into 2 questions regarding the concepts provided during the lessons and the ability to apply them in clinical practice. Duration 15-20 minutes per student.
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS.
