Training objectives

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY and PSYCHIATRY
To recognize and assess the most important psychiatric disorders, with special reference to primary care and general hospital settings
To know the most important therapeutic intervention (psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, rehabilitation) in psychiatry
To know liaison models between general/specialized medical services and psychiatric services.
To know the main aspects of clinical psychology (personality, life cycle, psychotherapy, special situations)
PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The aim is to provide basic notions relative to the neuronal correlates of behavior with the purpose of suggesting an interpretive and rehabilitative approach to some social, behavioral and cognitive deficits based on recent discoveries in neuroscience. Particular attention will be devoted to the role that the motor system has in the origin and development of cognitive functions.
At the end of the course the student will be able to individuate and describe perceptual, cognitive and emotional functions and their relative biological and physiological correlates described during the lessons.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.

Course programme

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Knowledge and understanding of the following topics:
Definition of Clinical Psychology and relations with other medical and psychological sciences.
Normality and abnormality in behavior.
The Development of Self, Narcissistic anxiety, Oedipal anxiety and mature development.
Clinical psychology and somatization. Stress and Psychosomatic Disorders.
Methodological issues and evaluation techniques: clinical interview, diagnostic interviews, psychometric tests. Theories of Personality
Psychological Crisis in the lifelong psychological development: psychosomatic disorders of infancy, adolescence.
Psychological adjustment in pregnancy: maternity and maternality. The mother infant relationship.
General introduction to psychotherapic techniques.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding to clinical practice and development of judgment and reasoning.
PSYCHIATRY
History of psychiatry, theoretical models and aims of psychiatry
Taxonomy and diagnostic systems in psychiatry: International Classification of Diseases (WHO) and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA)
General psychopathology and epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in the general population
Psychiatric interview and psycho-diagnostic assessment
Main psychiatric disorders: mood disorders, anxiety and adjustment disorders, stress-related disorders, somatoform disorders, schizophrenic spectrum; psychiatric disorders secondary to medical factors and other disorders of interest for primary care physicians (eating disorders, substance abuse, personality disorders).
Psychiatry in medially ill patients: psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison psychiatry
Treatment in psychiatry: psychopharmacology (anti-anxiety agents, antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers), psychotherapy, psychosocial and rehabilitation intervention
Organization of psychiatry in the community and hospital settings
PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
In detail, the course will be focused on the description of:
Brief History of Psychology, History of the study of the brain and birth of Neuroscience
Neuropsychological method. The method of the double dissociation. The mental chronometry method. Basics of sensory processing. Eloquent areas and not eloquent areas. Multisensory integration. Psychophysics. Techniques to identify the relationship between cognitive functions and neural substrate.
Learning and Memory: Cellular mechanisms of learning and memory. LTP and PTSD.
Oculomotor circuit (LIP-FEF) and attention. Peripersonal space circuit (VIP-F4) and the relationship between space and action. Grasping circuit (AIP-F5) and the ability to recognize the actions of others.
Mirror neurons. Mirror system in humans. Applications of knowledge to rehabilitation of psychiatric pathologies and psychological diseases. Mirror system and emotions.

Didactic methods

Lectures
PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Lectures: the teacher will bring practical examples of application of theoretical knowledge thanks to the simulation of experiments and the presentation of videos.

Learning assessment procedures

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Oral exam with 3 questions concerning basic and applying knowledge, understanding and skills of communicating and learning of main themes of clinical psychology
PSYCHIATRY
Written examination with a duration of 90 minutes in which 11 short open questions to the main topics of the program will be presented to the students. More specifically three questions will regard the psychopathology area, three the clinical psychiatry and psychiatric disorders area, three the psychiatric treatment, and two will be related to practical clinical cases. The students must demonstrate to have acquired the basic knowledge in psychiatry. According to the accuracy, precision and clarity of the responses, each question will be scored from 0 to 3 (range 0-33), with 33 corresponding to 30 cum laude
PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Written examination with a duration of 60 minutes consisting of 10 questions true / false (1 points per question), 10 multiple choice questions (1 points per question) and 5 short open questions ( max 2 points per question).
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TEST.
