Training objectives

LEGAL MEDICINE
The course will deal with the topics of classical legal medicine, the doctrinal and legislative issues of interest to the physician-surgeon. Focus will be on what are the duties of medical judges, duties and principal crimes of forensic interest. Focus will also be on issues of professional responsibility for biological damage, civil disability and social insurance. The main topics of forensic pathology and toxicology will be discussed.
OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
The course aims to: 1) Supply knowledge of disease processes based on the profession of the subject and the occupational harmful factors to which he/she is exposed, also bearing in mind the possible different genetic susceptibility; 2) Give information on the legal forensic obligations concerning Occupational Medicine that must be carried out by every Medicine and Surgery graduate.
At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1) Establish the possible causal relationship between patient disease and current and/or previous occupational exposure; 2) Carry out the legal obligations related to the detection of the occupational etiology of a disease (charges of occupational diseases, reports, etc.).
The course will also make the student aware of the aspects of occupational medicine related to his/her future employment (occupational risks and prevention).
WORKPLACE PSYCOLOGY
The course looks at psychological well-being in the workplace. Definition, main causes, symptoms and diseases of work-related stress are discussed. Legislative issues on the evaluation of work-related stress risk are covered.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiology, pneumology, audiology, internal medicine.
Passing exams of: Internal Medicine IIand medical treatment and Surgery II

Course programme

LEGAL MEDICINE
Principles of deontology and code of ethics. Information and consent. Legal Figures. Mandatory complaints. Professional secret. Certification activities and offenses related to certification. Principles of criminal law medicine. Offenses: framing. Perhaps, personal injury, death done by others. Imputability. Medical Malpractice. Biological damage and civil liability
Forensic pathology. Forensic Toxicology. Tanatology and Death Law. Private and social insurance
Special Laws of Legal Medical Interest: Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy, Law on the Suppression of Sexual Violence
Social medicine: social protection, assistance and insurance, INPS, INAIL.
The teaching is useful and necessary complement to the participation in activities of diagnostic examination (external examination, autopsy).
OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE
Definition and historical notes of Italian occupational medicine. Occupational injury, occupational disease, and INAIL. Occupational history. Environmental and biological monitoring with reference to art. 28 of Dlgl 81/08 on Gender Differences. Health surveillance and legal medical duties
Physical agents: noise. Solvents: classification, benzene
Metals: lead
Occupational Respiratory Diseases:
a) Diseases caused by organic dusts: occupational asthma
b) Diseases of inorganic dusts: asbestos and asbestos-related diseases; general classification of pneumoconiosis; silicosis
Diseases related to manually handling loads: low back pain
WORKPLACE PSYCOLOGY
Definition, symptoms and diseases due to work-related stress. Evaluation of work-related stress risk. Mobbing and Burn-out.

LEGAL MEDICINE: written exam: 31 multiple choice questions (each with 4 possible responses). Each question is worth 1 point if correct; wrong answer or no answer 0 point; 1 hour duration
OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE and WORKPLACE PSYCOLOGY: written exam: 31 multiple choice questions (each with 4 possible responses). Each question is worth 1 point if correct; wrong answer or no answer 0 point; 1 hour duration
THE FINAL GRADE IS AN ARITMETIC AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TEST.
The final outcome will depend also on the practice sessions.
