Training objectives

The integrated course of Legal and Occupational Medicine includes the following modules:
Occupational Medicine;
Forensic Medicine
Work psychology.
The teaching aims to deal with the topics of classical forensic medicine, the doctrinal and legislative topics of interest to the doctor-surgeon. The legal obligations of the doctor, the duties and the main crimes of forensic interest will be focused. The topics of professional liability for biological damage, civil invalidity and social insurance will also be focused. The main topics of forensic pathology and toxicology will be covered. The "Occupational Medicine" module aims to provide knowledge of the morbid processes dependent on the subject's profession and the harmful factors to which the profession itself exposes him, also bearing in mind the possible different susceptibility linked to gender. In addition, the legislative provisions relating to medico-legal obligations in the field of occupational medicine will be dealt with, which must be completed by every graduate in Medicine and Surgery. The "Psychology of Work" module will deal with the topics of work stress and burnout; work engagement and workaholism; working climate and mobbing; work commitment and work identification.

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
In terms of knowledge:
- learn the legislation relating to Forensic and Occupational Medicine of interest to the surgeon including the legal and deontological obligations of the surgeon;
- have knowledge of the principles of social security and labor medicine;
- understand the causal link in the main fields of Legal and Occupational Medicine;
-identify the principles of occupational diseases, pathology and forensic toxicology;
- recognize the main causes, manifestations and consequences of work-related stress, burnout, workaholism, mobbing.

In terms of skills:
- recognize the conditions that require the application of the legal obligations of the surgeon;
- draw up the documentation required in the fields of Legal and Occupational Medicine (e.g. certification of accidents at work and occupational diseases, mandatory reports, medical reports, medical records, etc.);
- respect the ethical obligations of the surgeon;
- reflect on the causes of phenomena such as work-related stress, burnout, workaholism, mobbing and identify possible counter strategies.

The “Work Psychology” module will introduce basic work psychology topics (e.g., motivation, commitment, performance), and subsequently focus on topics relevant for physicians, i.e. human errors in the workplace; work-related stress and burnout; work engagement and workaholism; workplace aggression and mobbing.

The module of Legal Medicine provides frontal lectures and on-line assisted teaching. The on-line teaching hours of moodle platform certification service consist of the insights of some topics presented during the frontal lessons and indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course. The teaching activity is also integrated by practical activity which consists of lectures, presentation of cases with problem solving method and seminars on specific subjects of the discipline. The teaching activity will also be supplemented by exercises in the morgue with observation of autopsies.

The occupational medicine module includes frontal lessons and online assisted teaching. The hours of online assisted teaching on the certification moodle platform consist in deepening some topics covered in class and indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course. The course includes: lectures, presentation of clinical cases with problem solving method and seminars on specific subjects of the discipline.

Frontal lessons, debates, and online assisted teaching.

Learning assessment procedures

The learning verification of the integrated course of ‘Legal Medicine' will be carried out by a written exam lasting 60 minutes, without the use of notes or books, in the presence of the teacher. The questions will be formulated with multiple choice questions (5 options) relating to all the educational objectives of the course as defined above. The test will consist of 63 questions, the number of which will be parameterized to the credits, on topics covered in the 3 modules ("Forensic Medicine", "Occupational Medicine" and "Occupational Psychology"). The assessment will also take into account the practical part and may also present clinical cases, in order to verify the knowledge acquired by the student relating to regulatory extracts, etiology and causal link possibly proposing simple clinical and/or autopsy references covered in class.
Each question will be worth 0.5 points if correct; wrong answer or no answer 0 points. To pass the exam, and to acquire a minimum score of 18/30, it will be necessary to correctly answer at least 36 questions out of 63. The maximum mark, equal to 30 cum laude, will be achieved by those who correctly answer at least 61 questions out of 63.
