Training objectives

INTERNAL MEDICINE
To acquire diagnostic and therapeutic skill in order to be able to recognize and manage the most important internistic diseases and syndromes. Particular importance will be dedicated to the problem oriented clinical approach and to differential diagnosis procedures, with reference to gender differences. Some metabolic disease largely prevalent in Western countries will also be also discussed from the physiopathological, clinical, and therapeutic point of view.
During the course you will try to develop the capacity to face an ethical problem which can intersect the daily clinical activity.
Acquisition of the methodology for its analysis.
PHARMACOLOGY
This course is designed to increase the student's knowledge in the field of chemotherapy, explaining the mechanisms of action of antibiotics should be used and how the different classes of drugs in clinical situations. The course also highlights the proper use of antibiotics to contain and reduce resistance. The course fits chemotherapy in other disciplines, such as infectious diseases and internal medicine.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology
Familiarity with general and special pharmacology and microbiology. Background in cellular and molecular biology.
Basic notion in ethics and critical thinking

Course programme

INTERNAL MEDICINE
Presentation and discussion of the principal syndromes of internal medicine and of the principal metabolic diseases with particular focus on clinical methodology, differential diagnosis and specific treatment.
Discuss the clinical approach oriented for problems or syndromic frameworks and the clinical reasoning in the differential diagnosis, with reference to gender differences
PHARMACOLOGY
General Principles of Chemotherapy. ß-lactam antibiotics, Aminoglycosides, Quinolones, Clindamycin, Glicopeptides, Macrolides. Antigungal agents. Antibiotic prophylaxis in surgery. Anticancer drugs

Didactic methods

INTERNAL MEDICINE
Lectures and exercises in small groups on the ward.
For group discussion of ethically relevant clinical cases: Structure of a meeting
1) 15’: Presentation of the case with ethical implication by a clinician
2) 30’: Discussion of the case by the students divided into groups
3) 15’: Presentation of the group analysis
4) 15’: Critical discussion by the teacher of the students’ presentation
5) 15’ General discussion

Learning assessment procedures

INTERNAL MEDICINE
The exam is an oral section, lasting > 30 minutes, designed to evaluate the degree of knowledge and understanding of the topics (medical syndromes, differential diagnosis, basic treatment) in internal medicine). During the examination a short practical test will take place (brief evaluation of a medical record). The objective of the examination is to verify the ability to compare and to connect differed topics developed during the course.

PHARMACOLOGY
Written exam: 31 multiple choice questions (each with four answers). Each question is worth 1 points if correct; wrong answer or no answer 0 points. With all the correct answers you get the praise. Allotted time: 40 minutes
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TEST.
