Training objectives
- The goal of the course is to make students aware about the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of breast cancer and melanoma. This course will give students useful knowledge that can be applied in the daily medical practice: as general practitioners to provide the right support and information to their patients and to adequately address the patients for a specialist consultation; as a non-surgical specialists for a better collaboration with surgeons.
Prerequisites
- Attendance is recommended the course to those students who have already passed the test and the students who have taken the exam or are attending the course in General Surgery I.
Course programme
- Breast cancer: diagnostic tests and screening (mammography, ultrasound, MRI); preoperative staging; multidisciplinary decision of the therapeutic process (Percorso Diagnostico Terapeutico Assistenziale – PDTA); therapeutic strategies (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy).
Melanoma: early diagnosis, preoperative staging; therapeutic strategies (surgical excision, sentinel node biopsy, chemotherapy, electro-chemotherapy). Didactic methods
- Lectures, frequency in the clinic and multidisciplinary meeting.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral examination: 1-2 questions; time duration: 15-30 min.; evaluation criteria: ability to transfer theory knowledge in clinical practice.
