Training objectives

At the end of the course students will be able to describe:
-How the most recent findings in cancer biology have changed our understanding of neoplastic diseases and the strategies to develop novel diagnostic methods and therapeutic strategies
-The fundamentals of cancer genomics, including precision medicine
-The fundamentals of tumor-stroma-organism interactions (e.g., interaction between obesity, chronic inflammation and tumor immunity)
-The fundamental concepts of cancer “stem-like” cells or tumor initiating cells and the most recent strategies to target them
-The concept of “basket” clinical trials and genomics-driven patient stratification in cancer therapy.

Prerequisites

Students from the 4th to the 6th year of the Ferrara curriculum can be admitted. Understanding and use of the English language is indispensable to participate in this course.

Course programme

This course describes the basic and translational aspects of modern cancer biology, and introduces concepts pertaining to contemporary cancer biomarker research and clinical trials. Molecular classification of human tumors, precision medicine and cancer immunotherapy will be discussed.

Didactic methods

We will utilize didactic methods currently in use in the new curriculum of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Lectures, journal clubs and moderated group discussions. Each student will be expected to participate actively in group discussions and journal clubs.

Learning assessment procedures

Multiple choice tests will make up 70% of the grade. Participation in journal clubs and group discussions will make up the remaining 30% of the grade.
