Modulo: 28127 - PATOLOGIA GENERALE ED IMMUNOLOGIA
------------------------------------------------------------
The course of Pathology I and Immunology consists of two modules: Pathology and Immunology and Technical Sciences of laboratory medicine. The Pathology and Immunology module aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about: Basic reactions of cells and tissues to abnormal or exogenous stimuli. Identification of elements which characterize diseases and cause modifications to tissues and organs. Correlate morphological alterations to clinical findings. Eziology (or what causes a disease), evolution of diseases (pathogenesis), structural and functional alterations and their clinical importance. The knowledge of the principles of the immune responses, the defence against infection, hypersensitivity states, immunopathology. The technical Sciences of laboratory medicine module aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about: the genetical characteristics of molecules involved in the immune response.The main knowledge and correlation capabilities include: structure and function of genes involved in the immune response; evolution of these genes; their role in transplants and in autoimmune diseases.

GENERAL PATHOLOGY
Etiology and pathogenesis; agents that cause diseases: physical, chemical and nutritional elements.
Cellular Pathology. Cell death process: necrosis, apoptosis and autophagy.
Mechanism of action and biotechnological use of bacterial toxins
Acute inflammation, chronic inflammation and wound healing.
Molecular pathology: the most common genetic disorders (hereditary anemias, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy).
IMMUNOLOGY
Innate and adaptive immunity. Main components of innate immunity: chemical-physical protection, receptors and molecules mediating natural immunity responses. Opsonins. Toll like receptors activated pathways.
Main pro-inflammatory cytokines: IL1 and TNF alpha, their receptors and control systems. Septical shock. IL1alpha-TNFalpha blocking drugs used as therapeutics. B-lymphocytes and anti-bodies. Different Anti-bodies classes’ structure and function. The complement system. T lymphocytes: TCR structure and function. TCR-MHC interaction. Clonal selection of T and B-lymphocytes. Biological basis of tolerance. T helper lymphocytes maturation and function of different classes. Role of cytotoxic lymphocytes in the immune response.
Antigen presenting cells. Role of dendritic cells in T lymphocytes maturation. Antibodies affinity maturation. Immune memory. Hyper-sensibility: Atopy, antibody mediated hyper-sensibility, transfusional and autoimmune hemolytic anemias, myasthenia gravis, Grave’s disease, hyper-sensibility due to immune-complexes, serum disease, lupus, hyper-sensibility mediated by cells. Anti-tumoral immune response, role of immunosuppressant cells in cancer pathogenesis. Antibodies as drugs, monoclonal and humanized antibodies.
TECHNICAL SCIENCES OF LABORATORY MEDICINE
Immunoglobulins: isotypes, allotypes, idiotypes. Organization of antibody gene loci, creation of the antibody repertoire: mechanisms of gene rearrangement, somatic recombination, class switch. The T-cell receptor: gene rearrangements. NK cells and KIR receptors. MHC class I and II system: organization and polymorphism of the MHC gene loci. Association of HLA with diseases and transplants

Both modules provides frontal lectures and on-line assisted teaching. The on-line teaching hours of moodle platform certification service consist in the insights of some topics presented during the frontal lessons and indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course.

The course of Pathology I and Immunology consists of two modules: Pathology and Immunology and Technical Sciences of laboratory medicine. Both modules provides frontal lectures and on-line assisted teaching. The on-line teaching hours of moodle platform certification service consist in the insights of some topics presented during the frontal lessons and indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course.

Learning assessment procedures

The learning verification will be carried out by a written exam, lasting 60 to 90 minutes, without the use of notes or books or personal multimedia support, in the presence of the teachers. The test will be formulated with multiple-choice questions (4 multiple-choice) relating to all the educational goals. The exam is divided into 2 parts one including Pathology tests and the other related to the Immunology and Technical sciences of laboratory medicine program. Both tests will be performed on the same day . The student will acquire 1 point for each correct answer, penalized of -0,5 for each incorrect answer and get 0 point for any question left unanswered. The minimal required score will be of 18 for each part of the test. The final vote will be obtained by calculating the mean of the two scores.
