Training objectives

The course lasts one year. The goal of the course is to provide students, through the integration of medical history and interpretation of clinical and instrumental signs, the necessary tools to the periodontal diagnosis and the clinical management of the patient in a state of dental and periodontal systemic health (primary prevention) and of the patient with gingivitis or periodontal disease (secondary prevention). training objectives are performing a complete periodontal examination, coding and setting the appropriate treatment decision algorithm, the execution of non-surgical periodontal mechanical ultrasonic instrumentation in different types of patients with periodontal disease in the form mild, moderate or severe, and the setting of a correct and personalized program of home care instructions for each patient.

Prerequisites

The student should be aware of how to set up the unit and the instruments in order to avoid the transmission of cross-infection, master the concepts of disinfection, aseptic, sterilization; He must be able to handle the sterile instruments and contaminated, learn and prepare PPE, assist the operator. He must have learned the patient's acceptance and its preparation, registering functional biometric parameters to the diagnostic formulation periodontal folder. He must be able to communicate with the patient by identifying, through the use of models and information materials, the best oral hygiene principals to suggest in order to obtain the highest possible level of compliance.

Course programme

The course will provide the student with the tools required to recognize the clinical manifestations of gingival inflammation and periodontal disease through the identification of the causative agent deposits and anatomic abnormalities of the periodontal tissues: concept of Periodontal Debridement and knowledge of its clinical, histological and microbiological effects; recognition of irregularities root anatomy, etiology of recessions, furcation involvement. Execution of complete periodontal probing; detection of the presence of plaque; detection of bleeding on probing; identification of calcified deposits through use of the Explorer probe; periodontal instrumentation with mechanical tools and standard inserts (sonic and ultrasonic; piezo and magnetostrictive), its mechanism of action and the instrumentation technique.

Didactic methods

PBL, CBL, simulation model, exercise on patients within clinical training experiences.

Learning assessment procedures

Formative evaluation is ensured by the tutorial system during training experiences; in particular by the Tutor / guide who accompanied the student and looks at the performance. It occurs in three distinct times of the year (December, March and July). It is focused on the core issues. At present the experiences are quantified in number of 3 for the second year of the course and the evaluation forms are made available to students on the official website. The methodology is the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which consists of 2 parts: the first contains a list of skills, behaviors, expected results, while the second documents the level achieved for each competence through a staircase measuring (grading to verbal multidimensional descriptors). The Tutor / guide documents the level reached by the student for the most important skills, avoiding to measure it with a vote. The summative or certificative evaluation at the end of year is the synthesis of information obtained from the three annual assessments. The final score is computed on a score in tenths attributed to three tests, also integrated with data on students from various sources (evolution in the skills documented in the internship profiles, quality of any report, projects, individual works, participation in other initiatives). The examination is run by a committee chaired by the Director of Educational activities with a professional Tutor representation, in some cases it is also considered the presence of other teachers.
