Training objectives

DENTAL MATERIALS
To know science and technology of Bio-materials used in dentistry
SEMIOTIC TECHNIQUES AND MONITORING OF THE ORAL CAVITY
The course provides the student with skills in recognizing the pathologies of the oral cavity
ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICAL RADIOLOGY
The aim of the course is to enable the student.
-to correlate the anatomy of the oral cavity with the radiological findings from conventional techniques (standard Rx, ortopantomography) as well as advanced techniques (CT).
-to recognize the information provided by each imaging technique regarding teeth, jaws and oral cavity.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of human anatomy, pathology and physiology of the oral cavity.
Basic knowledge of ionized radiation physics, used for human imaging

Course programme

DENTAL MATERIALS
Science and technology of dental materials. Call-backs on the matter: composition, structure and state of aggregation. The states of equilibrium. Adhesion and Cohesion. Biological, physical, technological properties; knowledge of commodities.
The Metals: solidification and structure. The alloys: constitution and reaction at the solid state. Dental amalgams. Dental cements: classification, composition and structure.
Resins for Restorative Dentistry. Enamel-dentinal adhesive systems. Techniques of polymerization.
The materials in Endodontics. Materials for restoration devitalized teeth.
Gypsums: gypsums for models, gypsums for print. Waxes. Dental ceramics: classification and their structure. Prosthetic Dentistry. Rigid materials for dental prints: thermoplastic pastes, gypsums, to Zinc oxide-Eugenolo pastes. The elastic materials for dental prints: irreversible hydrocolloid, reversible hydrocolloid, elastomers.
SEMIOTIC TECHNIQUES AND MONITORING OF THE ORAL CAVITY
-aspects of the anatomy of the oral cavity, structure of teeth and periodontium.
-dental physiology
-the odontoatric visit:medical and odontoatric history,extra-intra-oral visit; diagnostic indices(periodontal, conventional, orthodontal), radiological findings.
-morphology of permanent and decidual teeth of importance for the hygienist.
-dental disorders; decay, periodontal disorders and receding gums.
-simple lesions of the skin and mucous (white lesions, red lesions, blisters, ulcers)
-pre-cancerous phase, tumours of the oral cavity.
ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICAL RADIOLOGY
Anatomy for oral cavity imaging: teeth, jaws. Radiological techniques for conventional Rx and intra-oral Rx.
Radiological techniques for tomodentitometry, and MRI. Post processing of digital images.

Learning assessment procedures

DENTAL MATERIALS
Oral exam: about 3 questions on dental materials. Average duration 30 min; the candidate must exhibit the explanatory ability, the linking between dental materials and clinical applications.
SEMIOTIC TECHNIQUES AND MONITORING OF THE ORAL CAVITY
Written exam, 2 questions (open answer), duration 30 minutes. Up to 15 points for answer
ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICAL RADIOLOGY
Oral examination, lasting between 20 and 40 min. They are placed on average three questions, one on the modalities and oral survey techniques, one on elements of radiological anatomy of the oral cavity and one on the traditional and electronic methods of documentation of imaging.
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS.
