Training objectives

The achievement of a high level of competence in the Spanish language (C2), increasing the quantity and quality of the expressive resources in both written and oral fields. Provide students with basic knowledge related to the Spanish languages for special purposes and to the translation of specialized texts from Spanish to Italian. At the end of the course, the student will know the main features of the specialized languages and the pertinent translation techniques; he/she will be able to analyze different kind of texts in the economic, legal, technical-scientific and touristic field and to establish which strategies to use in the translation from Spanish into Italian.

Prerequisites

Having passed the 1st year “Lingua Spagnola” exam (LM37).

Course programme

This is the course for the students of the second year of the Master Degree in “Lingue e Letterature Straniere” and it consists of two annual parts:
A) a theoretical part, that focuses on the analysis of Spanish specialized languages and specialized translation from Spanish to Italian;
B) a practical part (“lettorato”) with lecturers designed to consolidate the students’ oral and written skills through linguistic exercises.

The theoretical part provides a general overview of Spanish specialized languages, with special emphasis on the lexical, morpho-syntactic and textual aspects. It also aims to provide useful tools in identifying and solving the different translation problems that emerge from texts belonging to the technical-scientific, economic, legal and touristic field.
The lectures of the practical part ("lettorato") are designed to strengthen the students’ oral and written skills through the reading and discussion (written and oral) of texts.

Didactic methods

The course includes lectures with student participation and exercises. After an initial theoretical contextualization centered on the languages for specific purposes in scientific-technical, economic, legal and tourism field (15 hours), the course will focus on the analysis of the translation techniques applicable to these sectors (15 hours), through the study of specialized translations and translation exercises. The lessons of the practical part (15 hours), held by mother-tongue teachers, will deepen the reading and understanding of texts, oral and written expression.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination will be held as follows:
a) A final examination in an official date, consisting of a written test and an oral exam. Non-attending students can ONLY choose this type of assessment.
The written test consists of some open theoretical questions (between 3 and 5) and some practical exercises of specialized translation from Spanish to Italian. The theoretical questions will focus on all the texts listed in the program. The practical test includes the translation of short scientific-technical, economic, legal and touristic texts; each translation must be followed by a brief commentary that explains the translation choices made and any difficulties emerged. The use of the dictionary is allowed only for the translation part. To access the oral, the student must pass the written exam. The written test will be considered sufficient (18/30) if the student answers correctly at least 60% of the theoretical questions and shows at least a sufficient translation competence in the translation of texts, applying adequately the theoretical notions. The oral test will assess the language skills of the student and will focus on the issues raised in the written test and on any program insights.

b) Two partial tests at the end of each semester (generally in mid-December and the end of May, the dates will be communicated as soon as possible), with a final oral exam. ONLY attending student can take this type of assessment.
