Training objectives

The course aims to lead the student to reflect on some fundamental notions of translatology and introduce him to the knowledge of the translation tools and strategies necessary for a translation practice based on the analysis of the linguistic, stylistic, and sociocultural aspects of the translated text.
At the end of the course, the student will have acquired not only theoretical notions, but also skills and competences of translation practice appropriate to the different textual types with which he has practiced during the course, so as to be able to face any professional paths in translation field.

Prerequisites

B2/C1 level of French.

Course programme

The course includes lectures in which to reflect on the history and the theory of translation. In this first part, we will also reflect on the operations of translation and on translation and interpretation. The seminar lessons will deal with the translation of literary texts of gradual difficulty, with particular attention to the linguistic, stylistic, and socio-cultural aspects, to the context and to the purpose of each text.

Didactic methods

The course adopts the following teaching methods: frontal lessons and seminar lessons. The lectures are based on the theory of translation, while the seminar lessons concern practical translation activities. The active participation of students is expected.

The materials distributed during the course will be made available on Classroom, the platform to which all students must register.

Learning assessment procedures

Attending students
The exam consists of an oral presentation in class lasting 15 minutes on a topic of your choice presented in the form of a lecture, and which requires the active participation of all students; a written translation test; an oral interview.

On the oral presentation, other details will be given during the course.
The written translation test concerns the translation of a literary passage. Students will be able to bring their own bilingual and monolingual dictionaries.
The oral interview aims to verify the capacity for critical and personal reflection in the light of the topics proposed during the course.
The ongoing assessment of the student during the course will also be included in the final evaluation. The importance of active participation during the lessons is therefore reiterated.

The final grade (30-point scale) will be awarded according to the following criteria:
