Training objectives

At the end of the Course, the student knows the "gender / sex" categories; is able to revising the factors that contribute to determining gender roles and relations, stereotypes and discrimination, with a particular attention to the creation of prejudices. Can distinguish the aspects of gender identity and orientation, and knowledge of the social phenomena associated with them; includes the main dynamics of gender inequalities and the phenomenon of gender violence; can distinguish the characteristics of gender sociology, psychology and medicine by analysing gender in health / disease; is able to identify the tools of gender and welfare policies that help to counteract gender inequalities in the world of work; mastered the educational aspects of contrast against gender disparities, and in particular against gender violence.

Prerequisites

It is better if the student has already attended sociology lessons and masters English language basic knowledges

Course programme

The course is structured in three parts and aims to provide the basic concepts of gender sociology and phenomena related to the differences and the resulting inequalities linked to the gender factor. The first part focusing on the theoretical aspects of sociology, also in interface with other disciplines, aims to deepen the differences between gender and sex and the sex/gender system of societies; there will be references to the feminist movement and to the contemporary value of gender-related attention in terms of social equity; the signs of social and scientific recognition of sexual and gender identities beyond the heterosexual one; the phenomena of discrimination and inequality by analyzing data qualitative / quantitatively useful to assess the "gender weight".
The second part will analyze the phenomenon of gender-based violence, considering it as "avoidable behavior" and will consider issues related to gender and gender differences in health / illness, appreciating the potential of "gender medicine" the appropriateness of policies aimed at promoting gender awareness in prevention, diagnosis and care, with concrete examples of gender-relevant research methods in the health field.
The third part considers gender in family contexts (paternal and maternal roles, unpaid work) and extra-family, especially work and education. Knowledge will be provided on the tools for redressing gender inequalities at work, corporate welfare, gender-aware diversity management (attention will be focused on the potential of corporate CUGs) and the analysis of reporting methods (gender budgeting, VIG VISPO, etc.). It will end with a review of gender-related issues both on data and on methods related to the world of education.

The exam is written and consists of three open questions.
