Training objectives

By the end of the course students will:
- know the most widespread theoretical approaches and the related methodological problems concerning the family and childhood studies, with particular regard to the age group between 0 and 3 years.
- know how to report the main issues faced by the Child and Family Studies to a specialist and non-specialist public.
- adopt the basic tools to analyze the complex relationship between early childhood and family-territory with critical awareness guaranteed by the comparison between theoretical aspects and research and / or professional experiences presented throughout all the lectures and in the readings.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic theoretical and methodological approaches of general sociology and general pedagogy is desirable, in order to facilitate the learning process

• What do we talk about when we talk about family?
The several theoretical approaches.
• Family and generations
• The transition to adulthood and to life as a couple
• The transition to parenthood
• Transnational families
• The childhood sociological study
• The childhood’s structure and the children’s interpretative
reproduction
• Studying children and childhood
• The children’s cultures
• Peer cultures and interpretative reproduction
• Childhood, social and family issues


SPECIAL SECTION

• From family communities to co-housing
• Early childhood in Nomadelfia: a case study

Didactic methods

Lectures will be provided in the scheduled weekly timetable, entirely remotely on web conference, recorded and made available on the platform.
During the latter, students will be directly involved in conducting lessons through personal knowledges/experiences in relation to the topics concerned. Multimedia work-tools will be used in order to display documents, papers and videos.

Learning assessment procedures

Learning test will consist of an oral exam for each student. The written test with open questions will be chosen just in case of many registered students for the exam. Interview will focus on checking knowledge level and understanding of course contents, besides the capability of interpretation and critical argumentation, according to reference text-books for attending students and non-attending students
