Training objectives

Learning outcomes

At the end of the classes students:
a) are able to analyse latin texts with regard to language, style, subject
b) understand textual problems referring to latin texts
c) use the tools needed for a philological research

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamentals of Latin language, literature and philology, acquired in previous Latin language and literature courses

Course programme

Program / Content

A. Textual Problems in Catullus' Carmina docta: reading, translation and philological commentary of Catullus 61-62 and 65-68.
B. Critical readings
C. Cicero, De re publica, book I, chap. 1-15 (translation and linguistic commentary); reading in translation of the whole I book; the history of the text of Cicero's De Re Publica.
D. Textual Criticism.

Teaching methods

As for A. section, lectures in class; students are supposed to prepare parts B., C. and D. by themselves. Videorecording of lessons is active.

Learning assessment procedures

Assessment methods

In a viva voce examination, the students will be tested through the reading and translation of the Latin texts dealt with in class (A) and listed in the programme (C) and through questions on choosed readings (B).

Assessment guidelines:
failing grades: lack of basic linguistic knowledge and inability to produce a correct translation and interpretation of the text.
passing grades: language proficiency at an intermediate level; translation and literary interpretation of the texts mostly correct, but inaccurate and lacking autonomy
excellent grades: language proficiency at an upper-mid level; translation and interpretation of the texts not only correct, but performed with autonomy and precision. Knowledge of Latin prosody and metrics.

Reference texts

A. Notes from the lessons, during which an additional bibliography will be provided; the critical editions of Tibullus' text (most of all Catullus, edited with a Textual and Interpretative Commentary by D.F.S. Thomson, Toronto 1997; see also below and sub B) will be uploaded to the teaching materials. We recommend the edition and commehtary of Alessandro Fo, Torino, Einaudi, 2018.

B. Critical readings.
S.J. Heyworth, Poems 62, 67 and Other Catullan Dialogues, in D. Kiss (ed. by), What Catullus Wrote, Swansea et al. 2015, pp. 129-155 (uploaded to the teaching material).
Further literature will be handed out or recommended during the course.

C. Cicerone, La repubblica, edited by F. Nenci, Milan, BUR 2008 or updates and reprints (up to chapter 15, aut nihil omnino ad vitam hominum adtinere dixerit); reading in translation of the whole I book; F. Nenci's Introduzione on the history of the text).

D. As for questions of textual criticism, the reading of P. Chiesa, Elementi di critica testuale, Bologna, Pàtron, 2012, pp. 11-146; (for further information R. Tarrant, Texts, Editors, and Readers: Methods and Problems in Latin Textual Criticism. Roman Literature and its Contexts, Cambridge, UP, 2016). As regards the linguistic aspects, the knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax on university level texts (eg I. Dionigi / L. Morisi / E. Riganti, Il latino, Laterza, Bari 2011) and the historical-linguistic, metric and critical aspects of the text contained in A. Traina / G. Bernardi Perini, Propedeutica al Latino universitario, Bologna, Pàtron 2007; For metric questions as an alternative to Chapter VIII of the Propedeutica al Latino Universitario (see above), we can refer to L. Ceccarelli, Prosodia e metrica latina classica, Rome, Società Editrice Dante Alighieri, 20042, pp. 1-45. For the Latin syntax we can refer to A.Traina / T. Bertotti, Sintassi normativa della lingua latina, rist., Bologna, Pàtron 2015.
