OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI:
Nell’introdurre la moderna nozione di cultura visuale, il corso si propone di affrontare tale disciplina dal fronte delle peculiarità che la connotano. L’intento è quello di fornire agli studenti ulteriori strumenti di approccio alle immagini ed ai processi culturali che le originano,
FORMATIVE OBJECTIVES:
In order to introduce the modern concept of visual culture, the course intends to treat this discipline analyzing the various characteristics that constitute it. The aim is to give to the students further instruments to approach the images and the cultural process within they create and change.

Contenuti del corso
L’immagine e lo sguardo: la percezione e la raffigurazione
Riflettere sulla proprietà dello sguardo come esperienza per avvicinare le immagini, ma soprattutto per comprendere cosa e come esse comunichino, è uno degli aspetti cardine della cultura visuale. Riconosciuta come disciplina da poco più di dieci anni, la cultura visuale rientra in una prospettiva interdisciplinare di analisi e di critica dei linguaggi visivi riguardati soprattutto dall’ottica di un’indagine antropologica, per la quale assumono valore i processi culturali entro i quali l’immagine viene prodotta ed interpretata, diffusa o trasformata. In sostanza per la cultura visuale le immagini non sono ‘oggetti’ isolati, bensì il frutto di pratiche che ne variano l’uso, ma anche il significato, recuperando ed aggiornando la visione propria dell’eredità di Warburg.
Avendo come nodo centrale le riflessioni che Hans Belting dedica al rapporto tra immagine e sguardo, il corso affronterà alcuni nodi connessi al fenomeno della visualità nella cultura occidentale. Si privilegerà all’interno del sistema della rappresentazione visuale alcune della modalità legate agli sviluppi della modernità (pittura, fotografia, immagini digitali) cercando una relazione con altre sfere della cultura legate al contesto storico e sociale attuale. Si darà inoltre attenzione al rapporto tra parola ed immagine tentando di svelare il senso nascosto di una moderna ékphrasis.

The image and the gaze: the perception and representation
Considering the activity of the gaze as an experience to approach the images, but above all to understand what and how they communicate, is one of the most important aspect of this visual culture. Recognized as a discipline only in the last ten years, it is included among an interdisciplinary project of analysis and criticism relative to the visual languages within an anthropological perspective, that gives attention to the cultural processes, where the image is produced and interpreted, developed or changed. Therefore the visual culture considers the images not as isolated “objects”, but as the result of some experiences that change their use but also their meaning, recovering and updating the vision inherited from Warburg.
Having as a central point Hans Belting’s considerations about the association between image and gaze, the course will deal with some subjects relative to the phenomenon of the visuality in the Western culture. As regards the system of the visual representation, some of the aspects concerning the developments of the modernity (painting, photography, digital images) will receive a particular attention in order to find a possible connection with other spheres of the culture relating to the historical and social context of this present period. The relation between word and image will also be considered trying to reveal the hidden sense of a modern ékphrasis.

Esame
La prova finale, in forma di colloquio, verterà sui temi trattati nel corso delle lezioni e degli incontri. Essa prevede sia una buona conoscenza dei testi indicati in bibliografia, sia una capacità di inquadramento critico della disciplina e degli argomenti ad essa connessi.
Exam
The last text is an oral examination and treats the subjects discussed during the lessons. It bases on a good knowledge of the texts regarding the bibliography, but also on the ability to collocate the discipline and its relative subjects in the critical area.
