Training objectives

The course will teach some of the main theoretical and methodological tools necessary to understand the operations related to the realization a product, through the use of three-dimensional modeling and Reverse Engineering (RE).
Cross-cutting themes will be approach such as product shooting, the creation of physical mockup models, their digital model by 3D scanners and virtual prototyping techniques.
At the end of the course, the students should possess the necessary tools to analize product in the different areas: concept, modelling, prototype development, production as well as interactive and multimedia communication systems supported by new digital technologies.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge, even in multidisciplinary contexts / areas, in order to solve problems related to new issues related to the professional context.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of raster and vector graphics.

Course programme

The course is divided into theoretical lessons and in the laboratory, with tutorials carried out with the tutoring of the teacher (single or group).
The lessons in the laboratory will be divided into physical modeling and shooting and Reverse Engineering activities.
The teaching methodology aims at specific and operational knowledge. The student will be introduced to a critical concept use to the acquired methodologies.




The teaching methodology not designed to bring a comprehensive knowledge of the tools but to their specific operational capability. The student will therefore be introduced to a critical use and planning of work methods



At the end of the course students will be able to handle a production cycle, from the mockup to the presentation, using the tools acquired during the courses such as physics modeling, acquisition laser scanners, surface modeling, real-time rendering, product photography, and Stop Motion video editing.

Didactic methods

The lessons will be held at the Department of Architecture, the theoretical lessons will be held in the classroom for a total of about 30 hours. The lessons in the laboratory will be held in groups for the remaining hours and divided into two photographic and plastic sessions.

The laboratories are equipped with all the necessary equipment for the course, including sets and illuminators for photo shoots and 2 Konica-Minolta 3D triangular scanners.
The laboratories do not provide consumables and small items.

The following software will be used:
- Adobe Photoshop, Image Processing
-Raindrop Geomagic Studio, 3D scanning data management

Learning assessment procedures

Laboratory activities will be monitored step by step: photo shooting, mockups, 3D acquisition (RE), 3D modeling of the object. This structure will allow to verify if the student has mastered the tools, methodologies and sufficient critical autonomy.
The examination material will consist of two Book-porfolio (digital). The first Book explains the photographic shooting phases, the second one with free layout will illustrate the methodological structure from the realization of the mockup to the Reverse Engineering.
The oral examination discussed in the Book will ascertain the skills acquired from the subject will be addressed on the topics addressed and on any further study of the program.
