Training objectives

The course is going to
- provide a picture of the TELCO Market in Italy and prepare students to deal with the key engineer role required by business organizations ((Solution Architect, Project Manager, Ran Design, Technical Assistant, Product Manager, ...).

- create a connection between notions acquired during academic path and industrial context, in particular Mobile Broadband (4G standard and its evolutions to 5G), Fixed Wireless and Fixed Wired services (VDSL, FTTH) will be considered.
- make available to students, also through seminars, experience in managerial roles in telecommunications companies

The main knowledge acquired regards: Internet Service Provider (ISP) network architecture; service & business models of an ISP (MNO, MVNO, WHOLESALE); standard used in Mobile Broadband networks; spectrum management; techniques for improving the performance of a wireless network (throughput, congestion, latency, call drop).
At the end of the course the student must be able to highlight the key characteristics of the different standards in use, dimensioning a wireless/wired telecommunication network, also making cost and opportunity assessments.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the fundamentals of signal theory and communication systems, probability theory and statistics.

Course programme

- Italian Telco Market, Mobile Broadband Dilemma and future challenges
- 4G & 5G standards (LTE, LTE ADVANCED...) and outline of 3G and 2G standards
- BUL Plans (white, grey and black areas): cost opportunity evaluation for a fixed wholesaler operator (VULA, SLU, Open Stream,)
- Spectrum Management. 5G tender analysis
- 4G Network Dimensioning and Optimization

Didactic methods

The course is based on classroom lessons that cover all the items in the programme. Theory is followed by selected examples or exercises.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination is organized to allow the verification of knowledge learned with respect to the course program.

The exam consists of a single oral part based on topics addressed during the lessons

The exam can be done in English.

he positive outcome of the examination shows the acquisition of knowledge and abilities specified in the course objectives.
