Training objectives

This lesson is related to the basic elements of a digital multimedia system.

The main goal of the lesson is to give to students the instruments to understand the basic elements of multimedia systems: data, picture, audio, video.

Main learned acknowledgment:
- basic elements of a multimedia system (text, picture, audio, video)
- main source compression algorithms (text, picture, audio, video)
- network protocols to support multimedia communications.

Main learned competence:
- analysis of multimedia sources
- implementation of simple compression algorithms
- analysis of the performances of source compression algorithms.

Course programme

Multimedia system and information representation. Multimedia networks. Multimedia applications. Digitalization principle. Text and hypertext. Images: scanner, fax, colors, raster. Audio: PCM, CD, MIDI. Video: television (luminance, crhominance, etc) , 4:2:2, 4:2:0, HDTV, SIF, CIF, QCIF. Compression basics, entropy, differential coding, transformation coding. Text compression: static Huffman, synamic Huffman, arithmetic coding, Lempel-Zip, Lempel-Zip-Welsh. Image compression: GIF, TIFF, FAX group 3 e 4, JPEG. Audio compression: DPCM, DPCM adattativi (G.721 G.722), adaprove predictive compression, predictive linear coding LPC, LPC with excited CELP, psycoacustic coding models, MPEG, Dolby AC-1 AC-2 AC-3. Video compression: principle, I, P, B and D frames, H.261, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, channel error robustness. TCP/IP. Circuit switching: H.320, H.324, H.321, H.310, H.322. Packet switching: H.323, IETF. Examples: Email, Web. Advanced examples: movie/video on demand. Multicast: routing e IGMP. RTP e RTCP. QoS: Integrated services, Differentiated services. Internet telephony. SIP, SDP, GLP. SNMP ideas. ATM cells. ATM switching. ATM Adaptation layer e QoS: AAL1, AAL2, AAL3/4. LAN and MAN based on ATM. URL and http. HTML (Form, CGI, PHP). Didactic methods

Theoretical lessons about all the lesson arguments.
Practical implementation of a source compression algorithm.

Learning assessment procedures

Implementation of one or more algorithms of source compression, with related evaluation. Oral questioning related to the items presented in this course and to the implemented algorithm, by means of some descriptive slides. Examination success demonstrates to have achieved the knowledge and skills specified in the course educational goals.
