Training objectives

Knowledge and understanding: the course aims to familiarise the students with the main instruments which are used in practice to search for information in the field of law. It covers both paper-based and electronic information. Throughout the course, the students will use the resources made available by the Department of Law and its library.
Skills: the students will develop a practical knowledge of a selection of information and research resources relating to legislation, case law and scholarship. Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to find information relevant to the legal issues they are likely to address in the course of their legal education as well as in their professional life.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to know the basics of logics and legal reasoning.

Course programme

(1) Paper-based resources: (a) normative texts: the Italian Official Journal and the Official Journal of the EU, the volumes containing codes and collections of normative texts in particular areas of law; (b) Case law: information collected in journals; (c) scholarship: the various genres (monographs, treatises, commentaries, encyclopedias, etc.); law journals: types and classification. (2) Electronic resources: (a) norms: the Italian Official Journal and the Normattiva websites; the website site of the Parliament and the Government; EUR-Lex; the websites of international organisations; the websites of local and independent administrative authorities and monitoring bodies; the agreements' database run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (b) case law and scholarship: the websites of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court and administrative justice; EUR-Lex; the main databases: Infoleges and Dogi, De Jure, Pluris.
Classes will be structured as follows: 14 hours of professor-centred lectures, 6 hours of practical interactive training.

Professor-centred lectures combined with practical interactive training on both paper-based and electronic information.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination consists of testing the ability to use databases. During the exam, students will have 40 minutes to carry out 2 legal researches.
Alternatively (and subject to prior notification, via email, of their wish to use this examination method), students may take an oral exam, in a single interview with the examining board, which will check their knowledge and understanding of the computer and paper-based resources. The examination is not graded in thirtieths, but a pass/fail judgment.
