The course is part of the "thematic package" devoted to organized crime, together with the courses of Diritto dell'esecuzione penale (prof. Stefania Carnevale), Storia del diritto penale (prof. Michele Pifferi) and Teoria generale del diritto (prof. Orsetta Giolo).
The course will be divided in two parts. The first part (30 hours) will consist in a general introduction to International Human Rights, dealing with the following issues:
1. The origins of international human rights.
2. Human Rights within the UN system: standards and control mechanisms.
3. Regional systems of human rights protection: specifically, the Council of Europe and the European Convention of Human Rights.
4. The implementation of human rights standards at national level: specifically, the Italian legal order.

The second part of the course will consist of five hours devoted to analysing the relationship between human rights and the fight against organized crime, and of some seminars organized in cooperation with the other courses involved in the thematic package.

The exam will be held in English.

For students involved in the thematic package:
- attending the course is mandatory;
- the exam will consist of an oral exam on the topics covered by the first part of the course and the discussion of an essay which will be assessed in the context of each of the courses involved in the thematic package. The essay may be written either in English or in Italian.
