Training objectives

Aim of the course is the study of the systems of management, organization and accounting for cultural organizations. The course will be developed starting from the analysis of the economic context and the fundamental economic theories for the cultural industry, with a special focus on museums and theaters.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the managerial dynamics of the cultural industry and to apply the management tools for the organizations belonging to this sector, in particular museums and theaters.

Prerequisites

Students should already have a general knowledge of the basic concepts of public economics and business administration, with particular reference to the role of planning and control systems.

Course programme

1st Module: Management of cultural organizations (18 hours)
- Basic elements of management in a cultural organization
- Links between institutional background and management system
- Managerial and organizational choices
- The evolution of cultural organizations in the public sector
- Planning and control systems for cultural organizations
- Principles of accounting in the cultural organizations
- Current and future strategies

2nd Module: Management, organization and administration of theatres and cultural institutions of performing arts (18 hours)
- Theatre management and economy of the territory
- Management of the festivals and economy of the tourism development
- Cases and real experiences: the case of "Ferrara Musica", the Lyric Theatre of Cagliari, the "Teatro alla Scala" of Milan, the case of the "Verdi Festival" in Parma.

3rd Module: Management of the cultural organizations for the visual arts (18 hours)
- Concept and definition of museum
- Historical perspective on museums evolution
- Management of the museum
- Museum standards
- Case studies of museums in Ferrara

Didactic methods

Theoretical lectures and case studies about the basic elements of the course, subdivided into three parts.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination. The course exam aims at testing the level of achievement of the previously indicated objectives. The examination will normally dealt with the three teaching modules of the course.
The final grade will consider the proved ability of the student to have achieved the learning objectives.
