Training objectives

The goal of the course consists in learning a set of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, provided by sample and census surveys, to support decision making processes in business and economics.

At the end of the course the student will acquire the following skills:
- synthesis and description of the information provided by the surveyed data
- estimation of the population parameters (mean, variance, proportion,…)
- test of hypotheses about parameters of one or more populations
- prediction of the values of some variables by means of simple linear models

Prerequisites

Basic notions of mathematics and in particular related to the following topics are required:
- techniques to solve first degree equations and inequalities
- study of functions
- limit of a function
- derivatives and integrals
- minimization and maximization problems
- combinatorics
- polynomial, logarithmic and exponential functions

Course programme

1. Descriptive statistics: graphs, location and variability measures, dependence and independence, correlation. Theory and exercises (16 hours).
2. Probabilities: basic notions and properties, Bayes' theorem, continuous and discrete distributions. Theory and exercises (12 hours).
3. Inferential statistics: statistical sampling, point estimates, interval estimates, test of hypotheses, simple linear regression. Theory and exercises (28 hours).

Didactic methods

Lectures in the classroom. Considering Covid-19 and related restriction, the teaching methods may change.

Tutorials are also provided, together with theoretical lessons, to teach how to use the studied statistical methods to solve real problems.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test.

The objective of the exam is to verify the level of achievement of the previously indicated training objectives.

The written test consists of 11 closed-ended questions and lasts 45 ': 4 questions deal with a problem of descriptive and inferential statistics; 2 questions deal with a probability problem; 3 questions concern a regression analysis problem; 2 questions refer to theoretical aspects.

The questions focus on ascertaining theoretical knowledge and reasoning skills, correct application of methods and interpretation of results.

For each question, a score equal to +3 in case of correct answer and 0 in case of wrong (or missing) answer is attributed. The final grade is given by the sum of the scores of the individual questions.

To pass the exam it is necessary to acquire a minimum score of 18, or to answer 6 questions correctly.

Depending on the evolution of the covid-19 pandemic, if possible, the exam will take place face to face in the classroom, otherwise it will be delivered online via Google Forms.
