Training objectives

The aim of the course is for students to acquire linguistic, communicative, and work-culture-based skills in English at the B1+/B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students will develop reading, writing, and listening skills in the professional domains of economics, business, and communication.

At the end of the course, students will acquire:
- knowledge of the phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic aspects of English (at the B1+/B2 CEFR level);
- good understanding of the syntactic and lexical characteristics of business English;
- understanding of (oral and written) texts concerning the field of economics;
- use of English in a flexible and effective manner for professional purposes.

Course programme

The course introduces students to the main phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic aspects of English at the B1+/B2 level. Students improve their business communication skills thanks to materials related to the economic, business, and communicative domains.

Didactic methods

The lessons of the course will be held in person. The lessons will be accompanied by practical exercises and the consultation of authentic materials provided by the professor of the course.

There may be variations in the aforedescribed methods based on the epidemiological situation.

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam is written and concerns the course content and materials. The objective of the final exam is to verify the extent to which students have reached the aforementioned course objectives.

The final exam consists of 42 multiple choice questions: 10 grammar questions, 16 Business English vocabulary questions, 8 listening comprehension questions, 8 reading comprehension questions. The exam will last 45 minutes. Students are not allowed to use a dictionary (neither monolingual nor bilingual). For each question, a positive score is given in case of correct answer, and a null score is given in case of wrong or missing answer. To pass the exam it is necessary to answer 60% of questions correctly.

Students who have obtained a language certification, among those that are accepted, will not sit for the written exam.
