Training objectives

The course’s goals are the following:
a)a first approach to, and understanding of, the variety of the basic economic units ("aziende") in terms of their objectives, characters, and types (firms, public administration, and families);
b)models and tools for representing and managing the economics of a unit (accounting), as well as for short term decision-making (e.g., make or buy, break-even point, economies of scale and scope);
c)an analysis of the organizational, managerial and institutional aspects of economic units, using also the concepts of "main economic actor" and "stakeholder" as means to interpret in a unitary way the life and behaviour of these organizations in a systemic perspective.
At the end of the course the student is able to understand the overall principles of management, referred both to for profit and not for profit organizations.

Course programme

The main contents of the course are the following:

1) The Azienda, the economy and the business economics.
a)The azienda in the Italian business economics (Economia Aziendale).
b)The theory of the azienda and the theory of the firm.
c)The azienda as the object of the Economia Aziendale
d)The concept of azienda and its dynamics
e)The subjects of the azienda

2) A systemic approach to azienda.
a)The systemic approach to the economics of the azienda: the azienda as a social, open and teleological system
b)The analysis of sub-systems of the azienda: the system of money, the system of operations, the system of the relationships azienda-stakeholders, the system of management, the system of information.
c)The system of business processes

3) Organisation, business management systems and decision-making.
a) Mission, vision e institutional scope of the different type of Azienda: for profit firms, public sector entities, no-profit firms, entrepreneurship and startup
b)The organisational choices: organisational design (structure)
c)Business strategy: informative systems for decision making, business model and business plan tools
d) Business management systems: management control system, human resource management, quality management and control

4) Financial Accounting.
a)Institutional purposes and goals of the azienda: Efficiency, effectiveness and the economic equilibrium
b)The assessment of the economic and financial equilibrium and the financial statement
c)Accounting principles. The accounting and financial recording system.
d)How to prepare a financial statement.

5) Operational decision-making: Using costs, prices, margins and volume to make decisions.
a)Production costs: classifications and configurations.
b)The break-even point analysis.
c)The make-or-buy decisions
d)The economies of scale, scope, learning, and transaction.

Didactic methods

Theoretical lectures about the basic elements of the course, in rotation with practice/exercise lectures about cost acccounting and financial accounting.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is written, without exception except for serious health reasons, testified by a medical certificate, which do not allow participation in a written exam.
The exam has a duration of 165 minutes and consists of an exercise on the preparation of financial statements (contents sub 4), two exercises related to the economic decision-making (contents sub 5) and six theoretical questions (contents sub 1 - 3)
For passing the exam, the student is requested to adequately carry out at least the exercise on the financial statements, one of the two exercises and one of the six questions.
All the remaining questions are worth up to 2 points each and the remaining exercise up to 4 points.
