Training objectives
- Immunology and Pathology are branches of the Medical Sciences dealing with defence and protection of the organism and with the establishment of abnormal conditions damaging single cells and tissues.
Therefore, students will be guided to understand how the organism defend itself from noxious agents and what happens when a defensive and reparative response take place. Prerequisites
- Basic notions on cell biology, histology and anatomy.
Course programme
- The immune system and its function. Immune cells: T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells, polymorphonuclear cells, monocytes and macrophages, dendritic cells. Lymphoid organs. Complement. Phagocytosis. Antigen presentation. Innate and acquired immunity. The antigen receptor of T cells (TCR). Immunoglobulins: classification, structure, functions, monoclonal antibodies.
Give basic notions on General Pathology, particularly on: cellular pathology (cell stress and death; apoptosis and necrosis); acute inflammation (tissue response to damage, cells involved in acute inflammation, inflammatory mediators); chronic inflammation and granuloma formation; autoimmune diseases; hypersensitivity reactions; mechanism of action of bacterial toxins (tetanotoxin, botulinum toxin, cholera toxin); tumors (general concepts, classification, causes, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes); atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Didactic methods
- Conventional.
