Training objectives

The course aims to provide a general knowledge of Theater history from Ancient Greece to 20th century Europe. Analyzing different historical periods, students can acquire the main concepts of theater for each period, looking at theater as a complex phenomenon. Students will also be able to understand how the various components of theater (text, scenography, acting, direction, production.) have been historically organized for performance.

Course programme

“History of theater from Ancient Greece to 20th century Europe”. The module aims to provide a general introduction to the most important periods and events in theater history: Greek and Roman theatre, the Medieval stage, theater during the Renaissance, the birth of national theaters between 16th and 17th centuries, the bourgeois theater, the Twentieth-century theatre.

Didactic methods

The course will take place in the first semester (October - December 2022).
Classes will be taught in presence in Italian.
For non-attending students some videolessons will be available at the end of the course on classroom.

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam consisting of 4 open-ended question, to be completed in 60 min.
