Training objectives
- Students will acquire English speaking and writing skills (B2 level) with a focus on communicative and cultural competence. In particular, students will gain a good knowledge of lexical and pragmatic aspects, will learn to translate short texts from Italian into English without the use of the dictionary. Students will develop textual skills through discourse analysis and stylistics.
Prerequisites
- B1 level of English in all four skills: speaking, writing, reading and listening.
Course programme
- The aim of the course is to develop students’ skills in the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects of the English language, based on knowledge acquired in the first year and to provide additional descriptive and metalinguistic tools essential to the development of the understanding of the language through the study of a variety of texts. Classes taught by English instructors will delve into spelling, phonetic, morphological and lexical aspects through text reading practices, written compositions and conversation. In the second semester, the theoretical module taught by the main teacher will analyse various aspects of current English culture in the UK. The interactive nature of the course requires active participation in the classroom during the face-to-face lessons (or in a virtual space) that will be enriched by practical exercises and the consultation of materials provided by the teacher.
Didactic methods
- The course includes: 1. Practical language lessons with native speakers from September to May; 2. Theoretical lessons held by the teacher in the second semester. As regards the practical language lessons, students are divided into groups in order to allow them to deepen the study of English grammar and acquire a language and communication proficiency at least equivalent to the B2 level. The theoretical module introduces various concepts and methodologies to help students analyse culture in the UK, and texts and other examples will be explored.
Learning assessment procedures
- The written and oral examinations will take place starting from June 2021.
The written exam is aimed at assessment of grammatical and lexical knowledge through exercises, a reading comprehension task and a short translation from Italian to English. The written exam focuses on the contents of the language lessons and the theoretical course. Monolingual or bilingual dictionaries are not allowed.
The oral exam in English focuses on the topics covered in the theoretical lessons. Students will have to analyse the texts examined in the classroom, demonstrating an ability to understand morpho-syntactic and lexical structures and the aquisition of speaking skills equivalent to at least the B2 level.
ONLY students attending the course regularly will be allowed to take a partial written exam at the end of the first semester and a partial written exam at the end of the second semester. If students pass both exams, they will have direct access to the oral exam without the need to take the final written exam. If students pass both partial exams, the average grades of the two partial tests will be the grade by which they will access the oral exam. Reference texts
