Training objectives

The aim of the course is to provide a basic knowledge of genres and authors of Greek ancient literature.
Students have to read texts chosen and have to analyze them in their cultural context.

Prerequisites

Greek ancient language (first level)

Course programme

The program is divided into two parts: the first one (A) is common to both curricula and concerns texts analyzed during the lessons; the second one(B) concerns the reading of specific texts for the two curricula.
Seminars and guided reading of the texts scheduled will be activated.
Further reading of texts in Italian translation, the study of critical essays and disciplinary handbooks are to be considered as integral part of the preparation for the examination.
Students who have already acquired 12 CFUs in Greek literature can choose alternative readings for part (B).

"The art of the tale": Aristotle, Poetics, 6-11 (1449b-1452b) or, alternatively, for students of 'Art', 'The Muses: Hesiod, Theogony, 1-115.

Didactic methods

- introductory lessons to the study of greek literary genres and authors;
- lessons of greek language (semantic and historical grammar);
- translation exercises;
- laboratory of text analysis


Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral and consists of two parts
1) Critical analysis and discussion of the greek texts (Parts A and B) in their inguistic, philological and literary context.
2) Critical discussion on authors, themes and genres of Greek literature.
