Training objectives

The course aims to provide the necessary knowledge for learning the horticultural sector with the analysis of vegetable characteristics in terms of biological and eco-physiological aspects, cultivation, harvest, conservation and yield utilization. The course will provide the basics of the technical and agronomic aspects regarding the production in open field or in greenhouse conditions of the main vegetable, flowering and ornamental crops. The student will develop knowledge on the aspects that characterize the production process necessary to manage and solve the typical problems of the horticultural and floricultural sectors, stimulating a critical view of the production system aimed at increasing crop sustainability and improving the quality of production. At the end of the course, specific technical-scientific skills will be acquired in terms of management of agricultural production and cultivation models.

Prerequisites

For a better understanding of the topics covered in the course, knowledge of the notions of biology, agronomy, agro-meteorology and agricultural chemistry is recommended.

Course programme

The course is divided in two parts. Part A (general) provides the development of the following topics: diffusion and importance of horticultural and flowering species; horticultural nursery (propagation material, seeds and substrates); systems and techniques of cultivation in open air and in greenhouse conditions; protected crops (greenhouses and covering materials); soilless cultivation systems (cultivation in liquid solution, cultivation on substrate and the nutrient solution); plant growth regulators and biostimulants. Physiology and post-harvest techniques. Part B (special) completes the course with the discussion of the main vegetable and flower supply chains (tomatoes, melon, asparagus, courgette, cauliflower, chrysanthemum, lily, rose and gerbera).

Didactic methods

The course is organized in lectures. Furthermore, theoretical-practical lessons will be held in the classroom (resolution of key study) and at host companies. Regular attendance at lessons and exercises, although not mandatory, is strongly recommended.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of an oral test aimed at evaluating the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the course.
The exam procedure can be written or oral.
The written exam is structured as follow:
Part A (general): 5 open questions on aspects on topics related to general topics related to the horticultural sector. The score is 6 points per question (maximum score 30 points).
Part B (specific): 5 open questions on aspects of the cultivation technique of specific crops. The score is 6 points per question (maximum score 30 points).
The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths (minimum score 18) obtained as average of scores from Part A and Part B. The exam lasts 60 minutes.
The oral test consists of an interview and will last approximately 20/30 minutes by addressing questions relating to the general and special part of the course. The scientific technical language adopted, the quality of the discussion, the ability to synthesize and the critical spirit of commenting on the results will be evaluated in the exhibition. The evaluation is expressed out of thirty (minimum grade 18).
