Training objectives

Provide knowledge of the physical processes involved in the formation of radiographic images, of the main physical parameters that characterize the quality of radiographic images, of the optimization procedures and for the quality control of radiographic images, also providing the ability to quantify these parameters.

Prerequisites

Classical Physics, Electromagnetism, elements of condensed matter and solid state physics, elements of quantum physics and relativity, elements of nuclear physics. Radiation interaction with matter.

Course programme

Physical image quality (contrast, spatial resolution and noise). Image formation process: introduction to linear systems theory (Fourier analysis, sampling theory, definition of MTF, NPS, DQE, etc.), X-ray production (X-ray tube and X-ray generator, focal spot and its influence on image quality, spectrum of radiation and additional filtrations, geometry of exposure, scattered radiation), acquisition of the radiographic image (analog and digital detectors, the X-ray film and its characteristic curve, the fluorescent screen, physical principles of the CR detectors, direct and indirect conversion in detectors for digital radiography, photon-counting detectors). Optimization of mammography examination and advanced applications of digital mammography (dual-energy techniques, mammography with contrast medium, digital breast tomosynthesis). Spectral Imaging and its applications in diagnostic radiology (2D & 3D). Introduction to phase-contrast imaging. Elements of ultrasound imaging.

Didactic methods

Lectures, individual study of specific topics of the programme, live discussions with the teacher concerning the topics studied individually

Learning assessment procedures

The levels of knowledge of the physical processes involved in the formation of medical images and of the skills achieved in the quantification of the physical parameters associated with them will be assessed with an oral exam.
