Training objectives

The objective of the course is to provide the necessary background and knowledge to deifine a subsoil hydrogeological model; the underground water flow modes and paths; to show the methodological approaches enabling to estimate the hydrodynamic parameters of the acquifers in order to evaluate their best management and the vulnerability of the underground water resources.

The main acquired knowledge will allow the student:
- to define the hydraulic parameters of the aquifers;
- to use the necessary elements for defining the propagation of contaminants in aquifer systems;
- to assess the aquifer vulnerability;
- to manage major hydrogeological problems.

The major acquired abilities that the student will acquire the capacity to:
- define the conceptual hydrogeologic model and the groundwater flow paths;
- calculate the hydraulic parameters of the aquifer systems;
- evaluate the propagation of contaminants in the aquifers;
- assess the aquifer vulnerability; and finally,
- plan the necessary actions for exploitation and protection of groundwater resources.

Prerequisites

Students should have knowledge of:
• basic elements of Hydrogeology
• Structural Geology and Stratigraphy
• basic Statistics
• fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

Course programme

During the lessons will be presented the following topics
• recalls of basic theoretical hydrogeology (2 hours)
• definition of the conceptual hydrogeological model (9 hours)
• costruction and analysis of piezometric maps (10 hours)
• setting of monitoring networks (3 hours)
• introduction to descriptive statistics (1 hours)
• space distribution of the hydrodinamic and hydrochemical parameters (4 hours)
• water circulation in fractured rocks (2 hours)
• drilling techniques (3 hours)
• pumping tests (4 hours)
• vulnerability of the acquifers (2 hours)
• contaminants transport in porous media (2 hours)
• water marine intrusion (2 hours)
• solid waste deposits (2 hours)
• isotopic hydrogeology (2 hours)

Didactic methods

The course is subdivided in:
• frontal lections teaching the topics described above (30 hours)
• practical lessons on the use of softwares (5 hours)
• practical excercises for reconstructing the hydrogeological model and the elaboration of pumping test (13 hours)

Learning assessment procedures

The evaluation of:
• written test consisting in the construction of a hydrogeological conceptual model and the underground water circulation
• oral exam on the presented arguments.

The final mark is the mean of the two above steps. In order to the exam is reaching a minimum of 18/30 for each step.
