Training objectives

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/1 - CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
The aim of the integrated course is to provide students with a comprehensive picture of the basic organic chemistry to tackle the study of complex molecular systems.
For the module of Organic Chemistry II the main knowledge to be acquired will be:
- properties and reactivity of organic molecules
- the mechanistic basis of reactivity,
- synthetic potentialities of some classes of organic reactions such as conjugate additions and aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions.
For the module of Organic Chemistry II the main abilities to be acquired will be:
- understanding the relationships between structure, properties and reactivity of organic compounds,
- predict the behavior of organic compounds in particular reaction conditions,
- be able to interpret a given transformation in terms of reaction mechanism,
- be able to propose the synthesis of a simple organic compound.

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/2 - LABORATORIO DI CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
The aim of the integrated course is to provide students with a comprehensive picture of the basic organic chemistry to tackle the study of complex molecular systems.
For the module of Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II the main knowledge to be acquired will be:
- the bases of the main spectrophotometric techniques for the identification of organic compounds,
- theoretical and practical aspects of simple synthetic methodologies.
For the module of Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II the main abilities to be acquired will be:
- be able to interpret the spectra of infrared (IR) and mass (MS) spectroscopy of simple organic compounds,
- be able to perform the main laboratory operations for the synthesis and purification of simple organic compounds,
- to write a clear, concise and accurate lab report.

Course programme

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/1 - CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
Organic Chemistry II (the module forecasts 32 hours of frontal lectures):
Structure and reactivity based on molecular orbital theory (10 hours); delocalized systems (6 hours), aromaticity (4 hours), conjugated additions (8 hours), aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions (4 hours).

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/2 - LABORATORIO DI CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II: the module forecasts 8 hours of frontal lectures and 36 hours of practical laboratory.
Frontal lectures: basic principles of infrared spectroscopy (IR) and mass spectrometry (MS, electron impact) (6 hours); interpretation of IR and MS spectra (2 hours);
Practical laboratory exercises: description of the laboratory experiments, consolidation of the main experimental methodologies in organic chemistry . The following transformations will be considered: extraction of trimyristin from nutmeg and subsequent saponification, TLC analysis of anti-inflammatory drugs, synthesis of isopentyl acetate (banana essence), acid-catalyzed isomerization of carvone

Didactic methods

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/1 - CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
Module of Organic Chemistry II: frontal lectures on all the course’s topics with summary exercises for each topic.

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 007351/2 - LABORATORIO DI CHIMICA ORGANICA II
------------------------------------------------------------
Module of Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II:
- classroom activities: frontal lectures on all the course’s topics with dialogic resolution of exercises,
- laboratory activities: student will be provided with a detailed operating procedure with the explanation of the mechanism of the reaction under consideration. Students are expected to prepare a 2-page report for each experiment that must be delivered to the teacher before the end of the laboratory.

Learning assessment procedures

Learning assessment procedures
The aim of the exam is to verify at which level the learning objectives previously described have been acquired.
The examination of the integrated course consists of two tests, one for Organic Chemistry II and one for the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II, to be held on different days.
For the module of Organic Chemistry II the exam consists of a written test with six open questions, which require a wide discussion of the topic. Each question is evaluated with a maximum score of 5 points. The written test will be followed by a short oral exam where the results of the written text will be discussed with the teacher.
For the module of Laboratory of Organic Chemistry II the exam consists of a written test with ten questions: seven open questions concerning spectrophotometric techniques and three problems on the structural assignment of molecules. Each question is evaluated with maximum score of 3 points. An additional maximum score of 2 can be given on the basis of the student's ability and interest expressed during the laboratory and on the reports presented.
The final mark is obtained from the following sum: 75% Organic Chemistry II plus 25% Laboratory.
