Training objectives

General and Inorganic Chemistry is the first course in Chemistry and deals with the fundamentals of atomic structure, periodic table and reactivity of the main inorganic compounds.
The final aim of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts and instruments for a full comprehension of the contents of more specialized and advanced chemistry courses.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to understand the electronic structure of atoms and molecules, identify the main inorganic compounds, write their chemical structure, and predict the corresponding physico-chemical properties and the chemical reactivity.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is required: equations, skills in the graphic description of simple mathematical functions, logarithms, exponential calculus, units of measure. No preliminary rules are present.

Course programme

The course consists of 48 hours of lessons.

The subjects of the lessons will be:

1) Atoms and elements: composition of matter, basics of quantum chemistry, atomic orbitals and quantum numbers, electronic structure of the elements, periodic table of the elements and periodic properties (10 hrs)
2) Chemical compounds: main classes of compounds, ionic and covalent compounds, towards a bond theory, Lewis theory, VSEPR theory, molecular geometry and polarity, VB theory, MO theory (10 hrs)
3) Chemistry of main group elements: main chemical compounds and reactions of s,p elements, hints on the chemistry of transition metals (10 hrs)
4) States of matter: gas laws, liquids and solids, main physical properties, state transitions, phase diagrams, solutions, colligative properties (6 hrs)
5) Chemical reactivity: thermodynamics and thermochemistry, heat and work, internal energy, first principle of thermodynamics, enthalpy, reaction and formation enthalpy, entropy, second principle of thermodynamics, Gibbs free energy, chemical equilibrium, thermodynamic definition of the equilibrium constant, acid-base chemistry, solubility equilibria, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics (12 hrs)

Didactic methods

The course consists of 48 hours of frontal lectures.
Recorded lectures will be available at the following classroom with code: uazkdxm

Learning assessment procedures

The exam includes a written test, in the form of open-ended questions lasting 2 hours, and a compulsory oral test lasting 20/30 minutes.
