Training objectives

The course aims to transmit to the student the theoretical / practical knowledge of the most important individual Olympic sports; for each discipline the following aspects are analyzed: short history; characteristics of the discipline; highlight of coaching metods of the main physical actions; rules and competitions.
The sports object of the practical lessons (Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Swimming) is designed to provide the student with the technical foundations, basic teaching techniques and ability to organize training sessions. Due to the vast field of motor skills involved in the practice of these three basic sports, students can easily transfer the acquired knowledge to most many other sports only theoretically analyzed: swimming will provide the foundation for all other water disciplines. Athletics will provide the foundation for the development and training of the “conditional motor capacities” (strength, endurance, speed) and gymnastics will provide the basis for “coordination skills” and joint mobility training.



Course programme

Classroom lessons of Theory and didactics of individual sports:
• classification of sports
• History highlights of the ancient and modern Olympic Games
• examples of training program
• Individual Olympic sports Introduction
• water sports (swimming, diving, synchronized swimming)
• target sports (archery, shooting, skeet shooting)
• equestrian sports (Olympic disciplines)
• power sports (weightlifting)
• water sports (rowing, canoeing / kayaking, sailing, kite surfing, etc.)
• combat sports (free stile and Greco-Roman wrestling, fencing)
• dexterity sports (artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.)
• athletics (notes and refer to practical lessons)
ATHLETICS (Practical lessons)
Techniques and teaching skills of flat running and hurdles, of the jumps (high jump, long jump, pole vault). Technical and educational throws (discus, javelin, hammer, shot put). Training techniques of mid and long distance runs. General guidelines for training plan. Various evaluation tests and training instructions.
ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS (Practical lessons)
Warm up: types and methods; articular mobility development techniques; basic body attitudes and postures; body alignment and hand stand; general, auxiliary, special and specific physical preparation; non- acrobatic movement: strength, balance and mobility positions; basic acrobatic movements.
Artistic Gymnastic major apparatuses (floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, High bar, beam, uneven bars)
The gymnastic movements: types and evaluation criteria (the code of points); competitions. Basic floor exercise routine preparation.
Gymnastics for children, issues on training young developing physical structures.
SWIMMING (lectures and practices)
Race distances Techniques and swim styles. Technical starts and turns. The technical regulations, educational activities for beginners. Macrocycle (yearly) swimmer training program. Practical experience training high-level competitive swimmers.

Reference texts

• Athletic tests (practical test on several specialties). The practical test has a maximum score of 30/30 and is mediated with the written test on athletics.
• Artistic Gymnastic test (Practical execution of a floor exercise routine. The practical test is evaluated between 1/30 and 4/30. This value will be added to the gimnastics written test score (the practical test score can only improve the relevant written test score).
It consists of four parts:
1. Questions of Theory and didactics of individual sports: five open questions (each question will have a different weight, depending on complexity. The total score is 30/30).
2. Artistic Gymnastics test: six questions; some are four multiple choice questions and others are open questions (each question will have a different weight, depending on complexity. The total score is 30/30).
3. Swimming Questions: 11 multiple answer questions with four choices. Each answer is worth 2.73 / 30
4. Athletic questions: 25 questions. Some are four multiple choice questions and other are open questions (each question will have a different weight, depending on complexity. The total score is 30/30).
The time available for the theory test is 2 hours.
The final assessment is the average of the four test scores (where the athletics and gymnastics evaluations are already inclusive of the practical test evaluation, as explained above).
To pass the exam, the overall result (and not that of the individual parts) must be equal to or greater than 18/30.
If the overall result is less than 18/30 the 4 theoretical tests must be repeated. The practical tests are not repeated.
