Training objectives

Understand the basic concepts of formal and molecular genetics. Study of pathologies with impaired movement and study of the implications that genetic factors can have on the different components of exercise capacity, and in particular on cardiocirculatory and neuromuscular function.
The course, structured mainly along a historical pathway, aims to provide the conceptual tools to consciously analyse contemporary pedagogy and education. This itinerary will be articulated around the main educational theories and pedagogical paradigms that still underpin research and teaching and training practices.

Basic concepts of molecular genetics: definition of genome, gene, locus, allele, genotype, phenotype, homozygosity, heterozygosity, types of gene mutations and chromosomal aberrations with some examples of associated pathologies. Mendelian transmission of Mendelian hereditary characters, their characteristics, and family trees. Polygenic and multifactorial inheritance: notes on genetic association studies such as “genome wide association studies (GWAS)”. Genetic polymorphisms and sports performance: polymorphisms of the ACE, ACTN3 and myostatin gene Doping methods prohibited in sport: blood, chemical and genetic doping and hints of gene therapy Principles of genetic counseling. Principles of ethics in medical genetics and ethical bases of clinical trials. Application and outline of innovative methods in genetic and genomic diagnosis Genetic basis of pathologies associated with movement disorders: dominant and recessive ataxias, neurodegenerative diseases with impact on movement (Huntington's chorea, dystonias, Parkinson's) neuromuscular pathologies (muscular dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, infantile spinal amyotrophy). Arrhythmic and structural hereditary heart diseases: classification and main clinical forms and genes involved.

The course will be developed following the usual historical periodization of Ancient Age, Middle Ages, Modern Age and Contemporary Age with particular attention to the characterization of contemporary social pedagogical paradigms and concepts.
