Training objectives

After completing the course the student should have acquired the knowledge of the theoretical basis of the functional assessment, of the general characteristics of the questionnaires and tests, of how to assess physical function and motor skills of people with different degree of fitness and state of health.
Based on this knowledge , among the available methods of functional assessment, the student will be able to choose the most suitable depending on the characteristics of the subject under study and the setting. It must also be able to explain the test protocol to the subject to be tested in order to administer it properly .

Prerequisites

To know basics of human functional anatomy, physics, applied exercise biochemistry and physiology. Knowledge of the energy sources for muscular exercise and of the fundamental elements of exercise physiology.

Course programme

General explanations and exam instructions. Scientific terminology.
Measurement and evaluation in human performance. The concept of "outcome". Questionnaires and scales.
The tests. Validity and reliability. Standardization of instructions and safety conditions. Clinical and Physiological testing. Laboratory versus field tests. Criteria for test protocols. Exercise test mode.
The tests for the functional evaluation of athletes: the anaerobic power and capacity, the aerobic power and maximal oxygen consumption, the anaerobic threshold. Isometric, isotonic and isokinetic tests for muscular strength. Flexibility assessment.
The tests for the functional evaluation of sedentary and healthy elderly persons. Cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility.
The tests for the assessment of the health-related physical fitness in chronic diseases and fragility: cardiovascular endurance, mobility, balance, muscular strength, flexibility.
The test for the assessment of physical performance in children and adolescents.
General review. Exam instructions and simulation.

Didactic methods

Frontal lectures and analysis of several videos. Practical exercises related to the testing procedures: students will be divided into groups and will follow 4 tutorials of 2 hours each.

Learning assessment procedures

The aim of the examination is to evaluate the study of matter, the understanding of the subjects and to verify the level of achievement of the learning objectives stated.
The written test includes 61 multiple choice questions, covering all the topics covered during the course, which includes four possible answers of which only correct, that is: 1 point for a correct answer; 0 points for a wrong answer or no answer.
To pass the test the student must acquire at least 29 points out of 61. The time allowed for the test is 1 hour. It is not allowed to consult texts or use PCs, smart phones, calculators, or other electronic devices.
Further details are provided in the first and last lesson, during which there will be a simulation test.
