Training objectives

In-depth knowledge of the metabolic processes underlying the functions of the muscle cell in the context of the entire organism. The student must be able to correlate the metabolic regulations with the physiological conditions that are established following various types of training in preventive and adapted sporting activity.

Prerequisites

A good level of knowledge of biochemistry topics concerning bioenergetics, enzymes and metabolism.

Course programme

Energy macromolecules and kinetic structure of biochemical pathways: control mechanisms of the metabolic pathways involved in the production of energy during exercise, flow-generating reactions of the pathways of energy metabolism. Metabolic activity of skeletal muscle: aerobic and anaerobic metabolism during exercise; phosphocreatine and lactate; Cori cycle, glucose-alanine cycle. Effects of exercise and training on glucose, lipid, amino acid and protein metabolism in skeletal muscle. In-depth study of some regulatory enzymes, carriers and the substrate availability that play a key role in modulating energy metabolism following training. Hormonal regulation of the different metabolic pathways and their variations in relation to the type of exercise: cascades of kinases and phosphatases, but also modulation of gene expression. Main laboratory tests for a general check-up and for athletes.

Didactic methods

Recorded lessons delivered in the Classroom.

Learning assessment procedures

Written report on the relationship between regulation of energy metabolism and exercise / training status. Specifically, the exam report will concern the contents of a scientific article or a review assigned by the teacher to each student.
The achievement of the objectives in terms of knowledge and understanding of the topics covered will be ascertained.

Reference texts

Will be provided by the teacher during the course:
- the PDF files used for the lessons and the movies of the lessons; - some significant scientific publications on the subject.
