Training objectives

The main goal of the course consists in providing basic knowledges of the mainly classes of drugs primarily used and their mechanism of action from the cellular point of view. Receptors, transducers and effectors can be studied to better understand the regulatory activity of the receptors. In particular the student will acquire a deep knowledge of the classification of the drugs in the sport and/or in physical activity and/or closely associated with pathologic diseases.
The main knowledge acquired will be:
- general concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics;
- mechanisms of drug action and correlation with different classes of the receptors;
- evaluation of the drug effects in the cells;
- principal drugs mainly used in the absence or in the presence of pathologies.
The main skills that are the ability to apply knowledge acquired will be:
- assessment of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics factors determining the mechanisms of action and the toxicity of the drugs;
- to evaluate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the drugs most commonly used.

Prerequisites

Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Human Anatomy, General Pharmacology

Course programme

The course forecast 24 hours of teaching exerted as frontal lectures where the following topics will be illustrated:
- General principles of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (4 hours)
- Classification of the drugs mainly used in the sport (6 hours)
- Interaction between motor activity and pharmacological treatment in different pathologies (8 hours)
- Pain treatment and motor activity: principal classes of drugs used (6 hours)

Didactic methods

The course is organized as frontal lectures on the course’s topics through power point presentation.

Learning assessment procedures

The aim of the exam is to verify at which level the learning objectives previously described have been acquired. The aim of this examination is to evaluate how deeply the student has studied the subject and how he is able to understand the basic topics analyzed. The exam is based on 30 multiple choice questions with four answers each; the question is worth one point if correct, wrong answer or no answer 0 points. To pass this test it is required to get at least 18 points. The time allowed for this test is 1 hour
