Training objectives

To give information in basic chemistry, useful in understanding contents of following courses. To give the basis of biochemistry such as energy metabolism and the main classes of macromolecules regulating biochemical processes of living organisms.
The course is intended to teach basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics applied to the biomedical field.
The teaching program is designed to providing the basic knowledge for interpreting the main statistical results reported in scientific evidence.
Know the main functions of the cell and the mechanisms related to the preservation, expression and transmission of genetic information. Know the different biology approaches and techniques applied to diagnostic and scientific laboratories.
Understanding of basic scientific knowledge useful in physiopatology of living systems.
The goal is to provide the student with theoretical information on the main microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), their interaction with the environment and with humans and the methods of transmission and prevention of infections. Some pathogenic microorganisms will also be presented whose transmission, through contact or air, can be prevented through the implementation of appropriate strategies.

Atom, molecules, bonds, periodic t., main elements, ionic compounds, subatomic particles, isotopes. Orbitals and outer electronic configuration. Electronegativity, atomic volume, periodic propert. Metals, ionic, covalent, dative bond, chelant, polar compounds. Electronic delocalization. Magnetism and electrons, radical. Intermolecular forces, water properties. Mole, molecular and formula weights. Naming compounds (5h). Solutions and concentration. Osmolarity, some exerc. (4h). Velocity and equilibrium, thermodynamic properties, activation energy, catalyst, law of mass action. pH and buffers. Redox reaction, redox potential concept, galvanic and electrolysis cells (2h). Organic chemistry in short: structural formula, isomers, asymmetric carbon. Hydrocarbon concept, saturated and unsaturated, aliphatic and aromatic compounds, functional group and radical. MEDICAL STATISTICS
The course will be structured around the following topics:
1) Descriptive Statistics: central tendency and variability indexes.
2) The fundamentals of probability as applied to diagnostic tests and biomedical research.
4) Statistical inference: Interval estimates (confidence intervals) and hypothesis testing with applications and examples in clinical research.
6) Inference on categorical data: the main measures of association such as Odds Ratio (OR) and Relative Risk (RR).
