The following topics will be covered:
- Notes on the history of Neuroscience
- Main techniques of experimental psychology
- Basic principles of sensory processing. Eloquent and non-eloquent areas. Multisensory integration.
- Psychophysics.
- Main neuronal circuits and related cognitive functions. The LIP-FEF oculomotor circuit and attention The VIP-F4 circuit coding for the peripersonal space. Relationship between space and the possibility of acting The AIP-F5 grasping circuit and relationship with the world and with others.
Application of knowledge to the understanding and rehabilitation of
psychiatric pathologies

Tools and instruments in psychiatric epidemiology: psychometric tests and structured and semi-strucutured interviews. Nosographic systems (ICD and DSM) and epidemiology. Epidemiology of the mots common psychiatric disorders. Epidemiological figure in psychopathology of adolescence (European and USA studies) and eating disorders and psychiatric semi-residential activity within the Department of Mental Health and Drug Abuse.
The Psychobiology sub-course includes 16 hours of classroom lessons during which the teacher will bring practical examples of application of theoretical knowledge by simulating experiments and by showing videos.
The following topics will be covered:
Brief History of Neuroscience
Main techniques of experimental psychology
Basics of sensory processing. Eloquent areas and not eloquent areas. Multisensory integration.
Psychophysics.
Main neuronal circuits and related cognitive functions. Oculomotor circuit LIP-FEF and attention. Peripersonal space circuit VIP-F4 and the relationship between space and action. Grasping circuit AIP-F5 and relationship with the environment and the others.
Applications of knowledge to the understanding and rehabilitation of psychiatric pathologies.

Learning assessment procedures

MODULE PSYCHIATRIC EPIDEMIOLOGY: single written exam for both the teachers. The exam consists in 5 open questions on the topics presented during the course and 15 multiple-choice questions. The duration of the test is 60 minutes. The scoring will be based on the answers to the 5 open questions (that should be correct, well-described and indicating a good knowledge of the single topics) (50% of the total exam score) and to the 15 multiple choice questions (0 score for each no-answer, , -1 for each wrong answer; + 1 for each correct answer; range -15 to +15) (50% of the total exam score).
MODULE PSYCHOBIOLOGY: The exam consists of a written test with 31 multiple choice questions. The duration of the exam is 30 minutes (0 points for each no answer, + 1 for each correct answer; minimum score 18).
THE FINAL GRADE IS A ARITHMETIC AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS.
