Training objectives

The practical skills and clinical knowledges are learnt by the experience of placement. During this path the second year student knows and carrys out: the orthoptic assessment and the ophthalmological techniques. The student: observes the rehabilitation and its results, can hear and communicates with the patient and their caregivers and the rehabilitation team. The course provides hands-on activities of data collection, data analysis, identification of problems, goals and priorities. The student is expected to acquire communication skills in patient/health professional relationship and teamwork in order to achieve competence in the three areas of “understanding, acting, and being”. The students learn to reflect about the clinical decision of their tutor and they learn to do clinical research.
The student can do a internship experience in other location, the duration and the location of experience has choosen togheter the educational director.

Course programme

Modulo: 015119/2 - SCIENZE TECNICHE MEDICHE APPLICATE

The course forecasts 225 hours of internship. These are shaded as:
-225 hours of internship which are conducted to different location. These hours are useful to learn and to carry out:
-study of visual function and pediatric pathology
-ophthalmologic techniques of anterior and posterior ocular segment
-perimetric strategies of automated perimetry
-describe the automated and manual visual field
-correctly the manual and automated perimetry choosing the right strategy
-examination of visual field in glaucoma
-knowledge about the ophthalmic surgical phases.

- 12 hours of seminar (3), which are dedicated to learn to create and to write a project of clinical research and the thesis.

The course includes 12 hours of laboratory, with the following contents:
- Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology: neurons, action potential, the retina and the optical pathways;
- ocular electrophysiology: what it is, bioelectrical signals and interferences/artifacts and miosis and mydriasis;
- Types of electrophysiological tests, execution and clinical applications: ElectroOculogram (EOG), ElectroRetinogram (ERG): Flash - Pattern - Focal- Multifocal, Visual Evoked Potentials (PVE): Flash - Pattern

The internship is done in some placement which are defined by the Orthoptics Course Council. All tutors of each placement, work together to planning, to management and to evaluation.

Learning assessment procedures

The student can do the exam when he will finish the hours amount of 100% of second year.
The assessment forms to evaluate the learning outcomes of internship are available at web Site of degree and into of guidelines of internship (http://www.unife.it/medicina/ortottica/studiare/tirocinio).
The aim of the exam is to verify the level of learning outcomes and the final mark will be the average of marks of of: Practical exam of internship, Seminary 2, Laboratory 2, Seminary 3.
PRACTICAL EXAM OF INTERNSHIP: The knowledge and skills will be evaluated by the Dublin’s descriptor, which belong following areas: prevention, therapeutics education, care and rehabilitation, management, professional responsibility, training and self-training, communication and relationship and EBP. The exam is composed by:
- OSCE-Observed Structured Clinical Examinatio and Mini-CEX Mini clinical evaluation exercize;
The overall evaluation expressed in 30/30 will be obtained:
- from the average grade for each area,
- the evaluation of the seminar 2,
- the evaluation of laboratory 2,
- the evaluation of the seminar 3.
The final mark will be shared with the student. To pass the exam it is necessary to get at least 18 point out of 30.
SEMINARY 2: (1 semester) Creation of a written work of up to 3 pages in Word format where the student will explain how to improve a visual ability of his choice in a sport of his choice through the sport vision training technique. The work will be evaluated out of thirty.
LABORATORY 2: Written test consisting of 6 open questions with short answers. For each correct answer, 1 to 5 points are awarded and 0 for each wrong and/or omitted answer. The allotted time is 60 minutes. To pass the test, the student must achieve a minimum of 18 points.
SEMINARY 3: the exam will be a oral presentation with writing support (PPT office) which will be about orthoptic topics.
