Training objectives

The clinical internship of the first year, in the second semester, is configured as a training path for integration into the working reality of the healthcare sector.
The module aims to achieve the following objectives:
- at the start of the process of acquiring relational skills towards the patient and the rehabilitation team
- learn the fundamental elements of the sensory-motor state of binocular vision and extrinsic ocular motility
- experience and acquire the theoretical and practical skills necessary for the initial approach with patients of all age groups who must perform perimetry, kinetic or computerized tests, and with pediatric and adult patients who must undergo orthoptic evaluation or rehabilitation therapy
- experience and acquire the skills necessary for the application of the basic techniques relating to orthoptic assessment and rehabilitation, to ophthalmological assistance techniques and to the execution of the computerized and Goldmann's manual visual field.

The course forecasts 225 hours of internship. These are shaded as:
-225 hours of internship which are conducted on Orthoptics and Perimetry treatment room and Eye emergency room of St Anna Hospital. These hours are useful to learn and to carry out:
-identification of the professionals figures in the organization respecting the professional roles in the team, -medical anamnesis
-Reception and integration with the patient orthoptics
-specific medical terminology
-reading and calculation of optical lenses
-basis knowledge about automated and manual perimetry
-perimetric artefact
-perimetric program
-knowledge about ocular movements and binocular single vision
-study of the relationship between orthoptist and patient
-introduction of orthoptics assessment

24 hours of seminar (1), which are dedicated to know the principles (name, diagnostic-therapeutic use) of instruments used in the orthoptic assessment, in particular: occluders of Spielmann for cover test, prism of Berens, cross of Maddox, Next Point of Accomodation test , Sinottoforo, glass of Bagolini, lights of Worth, striped glasses, test of 4 prismatic diopter, Stereotest, Post-images, Prove maculo-maculare of Cuppers, Hess-Lancaster Screen, Bagolini red filters , colorful filters, prism of fresnel, lens, Maddox’s glass, Pol test;

24 hours of laboratory dedicated to the testing and use of tests aimed at studying the evaluation of visual acuity, refraction and visual defects. Uses simulated patients to learn:
the use of optotypes for children, adults and the illiterate both for the study of visual acuity for distance and for near reading refraction test with the fogging method, lens test in presbyopia, red test - green, auto refractometry
proof of tests for the study of contrast sensitivity
test of the tests for the study of color vision (Hishiara, Farnsworth 15 and 100 tables).

The module is composed by:
Guide internship. Frontal lectures. Team work. Problem based learning
The internship is done in some placement which are defined by the Orthoptics Course Council. All tutors of each placement, work together to planning, to management and to evaluation.

Learning assessment procedures

The student can do the exam when he will finish the hours amount of 100% of first year.
The assessment forms to evaluate the learning outcomes of internship are available at web Site of degree and into of guidelines of internship (http://www.unife.it/medicina/ortottica/studiare/tirocinio).
The aim of the exam is to verify the level of learning outcomes and the final mark will be the average of marks of of:
•Practical exam of internship
•Seminary 1
•Laboratory 1
PRACTICAL EXAM OF INTERNSHIP: The knowledge and skills will be evaluated by the Dublin’s descriptor, which belong following areas: prevention, therapeutics education, care and rehabilitation, management, professional responsibility, training and self-training, communication and relationship. The exam is composed by:
- OSCE-Observed Structured Clinical Examinatio and Mini-CEX Mini clinical evaluation exercize;
The mark will be expressed on thirtieth and will be composed by:
- the average of marks of each area,
- the assessment of one written paper about the manual Goldmann perimetry, it will be composed by maximux 10 pages of Word document and the mark will be expressed on thirtieth
The final mark will be shared with the student. To pass the exam it is necessary to get at least 18 point out of 30.
SEMINARY 1: The knowledge and skills will be evaluated by practical exam of internship and the mark will be expressed on thirtieth.
