Training objectives

The course is especially dedicated to incoming students of Erasmus Plus program, it will be only English version. The general subjects of course are useful to learn and to examine in depth of advance knowledge about: orthoptics assessment of squint patient, who will do strabismus surgery; intraoperative orthoptic assessment; paediatric ophthalmology; rehabilitation of low vision patient.

Prerequisites

Basis knowledge regarding orthoptic and ophthalmologic science and anatomy and physiology of visual system.

Course programme

The module forecasts 72 hours of lessons, which are shaded with this method:
- Orthoptics useful methods to clinical focus and orthoptics assessment of squint patient, who will do strabismus surgery; particular care of management, technical and communication skills of orthoptist;
- Historical evolution of orthoptics patient is submitted to strabismus surgery, comparison with international literacy, our clinical experience, hint of under drop anestesia, skills od orthoptist which are used in these path (skills of management, technical and communication, pro and cons of this surgery and presentation and discussion of clinical cases;
- Pathologies of ocular annexes, anterior and posterior segment in pediatric age;
-Epidemiology of major diseases causative of low-vision or blindness, clinical assessment of patient with visual impairments to manage the rehabilitative training, forensic assessment of patient affected by low-vision or blindness, notions concerning type and utilization of rehabilitation aids (optical, electronic and typhlotechnic) dedicated to patients with low-vision or blindness.

Didactic methods

Frontal lectures and guided practical simulation

Learning assessment procedures

One oral section of 20 minutes, where the ability of linking different subjects related is evaluated, rather than the ability of “repeating” specific topics tackled in the course. To pass the exam it is necessary to get at least 18 point out of 30.
