Training objectives

INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL
At the completion of the Module, the student will dispose of the necessary information with regard to:
- structure and organization of the dental office
- equipment and instruments of the dental office, their functions and daily maintenance
- patient reception, organization of the first visit and the following appointments
- communication and empathy in the relationship with the patient
- main procedures for the control of cross infections in the dental office
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY AND COMMUNITY
The student must acquire the basic theoretical knowledge, practical skills and the clinical criteria in the field of dental community.
skilss to develop:
- Knowledge about the demographic and epidemiological aspects of the disease both in the prevention and therapy fields
- analysis of the scientific documentation provided during the course
- literature sources correct use , print and electronic ;
- Knowledge of the methodology within the organization of health services
- Identify priorities for action in relation to the real need of treatment, with the aim to target therapy to the people who really benefits from it, and for a better distribution of resources
DENTAL HYGIENE
The student will acquire knowledge about:
-Human dentition, chronology of human dentition, dental formulae, adult and child dental anatomy, periodontal anatomy
-Cross-infection control techniques and devices, and gain familiarity with their application
-Dental prevention techniques and devices, and gain familiarity with their application
-Mechanical and chemical biofilm control techniques and devices
- plaque and bleeding index recording.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the biological aspects of viral, bacterial and mycotic infections
Adequate background is required in: oral anatomy, oral histology and embriology, oral physiology

Course programme

INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL
-The work environment in dentistry:
Structure and organization of the dental office, structure of the dental chair, main instruments and their functions
-The management of the patient:
First visit: patient reception, filling of the medical and dental record charts, anamnesis
Examination of the oral cavity
The main operative procedures in dentistry: timing and modalities
Preparation of the instruments for different operative procedures
Counseling e communication with the patient
-The prevention of cross infections:
Fundamentals of cross-infection control in dentistry
Procedures for the reorganization and disinfection of the dental chair, storage of biological and chemical wastes
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY AND COMMUNITY :
Dental epidemiology and detection procedures
Epidemiological indices . Indices of need for treatment. Indices of priority treatment .
Etiology and epidemiology of caries and oral diseases ( neoplastic and non )
Principles of health education . Principles of food hygiene and fluoride .
Legal procedures and institutional references for the organization of prevention programs .
Oral cancer disease. Oral health in the elderly. Oral health in the pregnant woman. Oral health in drug addicted patients. Oral health in handicap people.
DENTAL HYGIENE
Patient orientation and acceptance
Anatomy and toothings. Biofilm formation. Plaque and bleeding index recording
Mechanical and chemical biofilm control
Patient-motivation. Oral hygiene instructions. Periodontal charting
Cross-infection control: barrier techniques, sterilization and disinfection procedures
Guided clinical training .

Didactic methods

INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL
The module will be conducted according to the following techning methods: traditional lectures; practical sessions under tutor supervision.
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY AND COMMUNITY
Lectures, “Problem-Based-Learning” (PBL) model
and clinical and hands on training . Moodle on line traning.
DENTAL HYGIENE
Lectures and clinical and hands on training with tutor overview. “Problem-Based- Learning” (PBL) system will be applied during the clinical and hands on training.

Learning assessment procedures

INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL
Multiple-choice questionnaire with 31 questions and 4 answers for each question. The time available for questionnaire filling will be 60 minutes. Correct answer= 1 point, no or wrong answer= 0 points.
PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY AND COMMUNITY
Evaluation of exercises in small groups and individual , written and oral , held during the semester ; Final oral examination. You need at least score 18 to pass the exam.
DENTAL HYGIENE
Written exam: test with multiple choice. 30 questions with 4 different answers to select. Test will take 60 minutes. Score 1 will be assigned to every right answer. Score 0 will be assignet to wrong or no answer. You need at least score 18 to pass the exam.
The final grade is a weighted average of the marks obtained in each of the three exams.
